Contemporary Realism

Online Exhibition November 13, 2024 - December 13, 2024

Realism is always contemporary, always defining itself in relation to the world and the art that preceded it. Realism has meant different things at different times. In the 19th century, as a response to the academic and seemingly artificial nature of painting, it was defined by revolutionary artists like Gustave Courbet, who applied a naturalistic style to the depiction of everyday life. While abstraction dominated much of 20th-century art, Realism has made a powerful return in recent decades. It is a style that speaks to both contemporary and long-term questions about nature, beauty, technology, and representation. Photography, painting, sculpture, and digital media have each used Realism to approach contemporary life in compelling and new ways. Site:Brooklyn is looking for works, across all mediums, which engage and develop this tradition.

About the Juror: Jonathan Griffin is an independent art critic based in Los Angeles. A Contributing Writer for Frieze magazine, he also regularly writes for the New York Times, the Financial Times, Apollo and Ocula. His book, On Fire,’ is published by Paper Monument. 

About the Gallery: Site:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions, selected by a cast of new jurors, solo artist features, and spotlights.

Presentation: Once accepted, artists will be required to upload high-res photo files of their work. 

Sales/Commissions:
All artwork must be priced for sale.
Artwork must be available for sale during the exhibition and cannot be withdrawn before the end of the exhibit.
Artists will retain a 60% commission on all exhibition sales. The price represented on the artist entry form will be the sale price.

Application Requirements

Only original works may be submitted. The fee is $26.00 for three (3) images, $10 for each additional image. If adding additional images please do so prior to check out.
All entries must be registered/received by October 14, 2024 11:59 PM MT
All entry fees are non-refundable.
 

Eligibility Criteria

This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all media. This exhibition is open to all artists 18 years of age or older.
