The Illinois Watercolor Society was established in 1981 and the first exhibition took place in 1982 at Glenview, Illinois. Today with over 190 members, IWS sponsors both a national show and a members’ invitational exhibit. IWS has also partnered with the Oak Brook Library and holds four meetings that feature demonstrations by nationally recognized artists which are free and open to the public.
Juror of Selection and Awards, John Salminen
John Salminen is a signature member of numerous prestigious art societies in the United States including AWS, NWS and TWSA. He is a member of societies in China and Australia and is the President Emeritus of the International Masters of Watercolor Association centered in Shanghai, China. John has won over 290 awards in national and international exhibitions, including multiple top awards in AWS, NWS, TWSA and Allied Artists of America. He received the Shanghai Biennial Award, The Pakistan Lifetime Achievement Award and the Thailand Ministry of Culture award. He has participated in over sixty invitational international exhibitions in sixteen countries. John is a frequent teacher, judge and juror for national and international exhibitions. His work is included in permanent collections in the United States, Asia and Europe and is featured in forty-two books on four continents. I began painting as an abstract expressionist, more interested in the expressive nature of paint than in representations of objects. I still paint pure abstractions but most of my works are realistic with an underlying foundation of abstraction. Even painting representationally, I continue to rely heavily on my background in abstraction to guide me. The balance between abstraction and the illusion of reality is the challenge that keeps me excited about painting every day.
