ADT Outdoor Sculpture Gallery

Arts Downtown, an independent, nonprofit organization that selects and maintains public art for the city of Puyallup, Washington, is seeking five (5) leasable, pre-existing, outdoor sculptures to be installed for two years in Downtown Puyallup, WA for the Rotating Art portion of our outdoor Gallery. No entry fee, $2,000 stipend for each of the five winners.

Puyallup, Washington:

Puyallup is part of an approximately 90 mile-long chain of cities bordering Puget Sound, beginning with Everett, WA to the north, and extending through Seattle and Tacoma to the city of Olympia to the south. It is a small city of only 43,00 population, but in the 30 years since Arts Downtown was founded, Puyallup has become widely known for the size and quality of its public art collection.

This will be a temporary (2 year) installation in Downtown Puyallup. All of the sculpture sites will have a concrete base with steel plate, and are fully accessible. The sites are spaced in a manner to promote walking from one sculpture to another, creating a trail to follow. Most of the 52 works in our permanent collection in our city center will augment the walking tour experience.

All works will be promoted as part of an arts destination, with online, print, and radio ads. A digital walking tour will be created and all artists will be requested to submit content to be placed in that online platform. We will regularly bring public attention to the Puyallup Outdoor Sculpture Gallery through in-person tours and at civic events.

Selected artists will receive a stipend of $2,000 for the 2-year lease of their work at the time of installation.

During the course of the exhibit, the public will vote for the “Community Favorite”. The “Community Favorite” may be purchased by Arts Downtown, the City of Puyallup, or by a private party. If the Community Favorite is not purchased, the Artist will receive an award of $2,000 at the time of de-installation.

ALL ART MUST BE FOR SALE. Arts Downtown will receive a 10% commission on any art sold. Artworks that are sold may not be removed from the gallery until the exhibit period is complete.

Installation: April 27, 2025

De-installation: April 25, 2027

Artists may apply up to 3 times with separate sculptures.  Please do not submit different sculptures in one application.  Each application will be for one, individual sculpture.

Do not submit works that have duplicates on display or are scheduled to be on display in any location within 60 miles of downtown Puyallup during our 2025-27 rotating gallery period, as these will not be accepted. Any work that we have accepted that is duplicated in another location during the rotating gallery period will be disqualified from the “Community Favorite” award.

Selection:

All individual pieces will be scored by the Art Selection Panel. The top five scoring pieces will be offered a place in the Puyallup’s Rotating Gallery. No one artist will have more than one piece selected, regardless of scores. We strongly recommend entering high quality images of the sculpture, at least two images to show the work from multiple angles.

Eligibility:

The exhibition is open to all artists, professional and emerging, who are at least 18 years of age and reside or work in the western United States. Board members of Arts Downtown and its Art Selection Committee are not eligible to apply.

ENTRY INFORMATION

THE CAfÉ Call to Artists for this exhibit will provide detailed information.

Application Requirements

One original, pre-existing sculpture per application.  Each artist may enter up to 3 sculptures by applying 3 separate times (one sculpture per application).

The Artist must additionally provide a SHORT biography, an artist statement that briefly describes both their artistic philosophy and the why or how of the work submitted.

Sculpture:

Arts Downtown seeks original, pre-existing art works in any medium suitable for outdoor public space.

The work must be mounted on a steel (or stainless steel for bronze works) base that can be tack welded to our plinths. The project must be of a scale large enough to be clearly visible from a distance of 50 feet.

SUBMITTED WORKS WILL BE EVALUATED BASED ON FOUR CRITERIA:

•Aesthetics – Characteristics such as being compelling, original, approachable, skillful, and satisfying.

•Durability – The work must be able to fare well for two years outdoors, in all kinds of weather, in an accessible, unregulated public space. Each work must pass inspection prior to installation.

•Safety – The work must not have features that could cause injury to a person coming in contact with it. It will not have features that invite climbing or other inappropriate interaction.

•Suitability – The work would physically fit into our intensively occupied and utilized downtown core. The work must be appropriate for viewing by our general population.

General Information:

Installation/De-installation: Selected Artists are responsible for transportation of their work to and from the site and are encouraged to be on site to oversee installation and de-installation. Installation costs and site preparation will be the responsibility of Arts Downtown. A professional sculpture installation expert will install and de-install all sculptures.
