The Figure As Story includes abstract and representational works in all media except video. This is a juried show and is offered to Bay Area artists in the following nine counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Upon acceptance each artist will include a paragraph (100 words or less) that identifies the story within the image.
Related Community Event: An afternoon workshop of mixing the visual arts with writing. Participants will choose a piece of art and spend 20 minutes writing a story about it and then share with others.
Application Requirements
Media: All media except video, crafts or installation. All works submitted can be completed at any point in the artist’s career.
Size: Not to exceed 5’ (60”) in any direction.
Entry Fee: $15 per artwork entry, up to a maximum of 4 total entries. Application fees are nonrefundable.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Online only, through Callforentry.org (https://www.callforentry.org/). For online submission support, direct inquires to cafe@westaf.org. YouTube also features many ‘how-to’ videos for establishing an account and uploading images.
· File Format: JPG files.
· All images should be at least 300 dpi resolution.
· File dimensions: 1200 pixels or greater on the longest side.
· File size: under 5 MB
· Please name each jpg file with the title of the work only.
Visa, Mastercard, or PayPal will be accepted for entry fee payment. Applications are not finalized until the entry fee has been paid. Entries must be complete and submitted by Friday, March 7, 11:59 MST.
Jurying Process: The jurying process is blind. Jurying will be from digital images submitted through Callforentry.org. During the jurying process any contact with the juror by an artist applying for the exhibition automatically disqualifies the artist.
Awards: Jurors will select three artists for the Jurors Recognition Award.
About the Jurors:
Kathleen Hanna is an independent curator and exhibition designer whose five-decade career includes exhibitions for Bay Area museums and arts organizations. She was an early contributor to the development of the Petaluma Arts Center, curating and designing ten exhibitions from 2010 to 2015.
Llisa Demetrios is Chief Curator of the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, overseeing the Eames Collection and Eames Ranch. She facilitated loans for "The World of Charles & Ray Eames" exhibition and worked at MoMA's Mies van der Rohe Archive. A third-generation sculptor, she has practiced her art for over 20 years.
Carole Barlas has a Ph.D in Adult Learning and Transformation from the California Institute of Integral Studies and is a local artist in Petaluma. She is a member of PAC’s Exhibitions Committee.
Eligibility Criteria
All artists, 18 and older, living in the following 9 northern California counties: (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma).
