About Joseph F. Haro
Joe Haro was a remarkable individual whose generosity and love for his community continues to inspire. His dedication to the arts led him to be a weekend docent at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and a guide at various museums, sharing his passion with visitors from near and far. Joe’s profound appreciation for architecture allowed him to give captivating tours of both Philadelphia and Haddonfield, leaving a lasting impact on those he encountered. Joe’s kind-hearted nature extended beyond his immediate circle, as evidenced by his thoughtful bequest to the Haddonfield Foundation. The Joe Haro Memorial Public Sculpture project reflects his unwavering commitment to enriching the community.
About the Haddonfield Foundation
The Haddonfield Foundation fosters charitable giving for public purposes within the Borough of Haddonfield NJ and among its citizenry, to promote, maintain, and enhance the quality of life in Haddonfield NJ. The Haddonfield Foundation retains all authority in the review of submissions and the final selection.
About the Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust (HOST)
Host is assisting the Haddonfield Foundation in the search for an artist. At the Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust, our mission is to inspire unique works of art for the public. With the guidance of our selection panel members, we strive to create sculptures that not only captivate the eye but also ignite the imagination. From thought-provoking installations to awe-inspiring masterpieces, we are dedicated to showcasing the extraordinary talents of the artists we showcase. We are a community-based, tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization that receives no public funds. All of the sculptures in town, as well as our fun events like Sculpture Month and I Heart Haddonfield, are privately funded.
Goals, Site, Media & Materials
Goals
Our goal is to commission an artist or artist team to create a sculpture that will become a vibrant addition of the sculptural fabric of our town. The Selection Committee will consider entries in all durable media worthy for outdoor installation, and will consider all stylistic variations, including realism, figurative, multi-media, kinetic and environmental works that push the boundaries of sculpture itself. We hope to find a work that will become a destination where visitors of all ages and abilities can gather and engage with their senses.
We encourage a broad diversity of artists and encourage applicants from historically marginalized and underrepresented communities including artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latino/x, Asian American, people with disabilities, and members of the (LGBTQIA2S+) communities. We encourage applicants at various stages in their career and applicants practicing a variety of artistic disciplines.
Site:
The selected artwork will be located at the Haddonfield Public Library, 60 N Haddon Ave, Haddonfield, NJ 08033, in an area known as the “Library Point” (Map LINK). While all of the Library point is up for discussion, a committee was formed by the Haddonfield Foundation with members of the Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust to determine a maximized location for the new sculpture to be on the Haddon Avenue side which includes a view from the main street of Kings Highway (Map LINK).
Selected finalists will have the opportunity for site visits and to meet with the art selection panel to ask specific questions about the site.
Media & Materials:
Durability and ease of maintenance are important. Works that are engaging and help to tell the stories of the area are highly encouraged. The selection panel is open to artwork in all media and materials suitable for permanent outdoor display.
Maintenance & Durability
All applicants must consider durability, long-term conservation and maintenance along with time and budget. Finalists are encouraged to consult with a professional conservator to ensure the durability of the proposed materials prior to the submission of a final proposal. Selected proposals will be reviewed by HOST to ensure conformity with town standards of maintenance and durability, as well as ADA standards. All finalists are required to stay on budget and to complete work in the agreed upon time frame.
Budget
The budget for this commission is USD $300,000.00. This budget must include but not be limited to: the artist’s design fee, other consultation fees such as structural engineering, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, any building or site modification required, travel to and from the building, site, per diem expenses, project documentation, contingency to cover unexpected expenses, and any other costs. For all work performed on Borough property, prevailing wage requirements will be applied.
