ABOUT THE JUROR
Mary Rush Waters
Mary Rush Waters is an outstanding artist in several different mediums with a love of nature and people. Her work has both integrity of form and thoughtful emotion evoking a time and place. This is because early on Mary was surrounded by beauty! She grew up on a ranch and farm between Romeo and Rochester in the beautiful state of Michigan. The ranch raised registered Hereford cattle. The farm had several orchards including apples, peaches, pears, plums, and cherries. It had been in the family for over one hundred years! This gave Mary an early appreciation and a keen observation of animals and nature, and she learned to appreciate the good of the family.
While Mary was growing up, she studied with several wonderful teachers who recognized her abilities in art at an early age. These teachers were an inspiration to her because they gave her many opportunities to excel. As a young adult she attended Asbury University in Kentucky and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Art Education. She chose Art Education as her major so she could be that teacher in a young person's life to encourage and inspire the love of art and creating.
She was blessed to have worked with children in several different school systems throughout her teaching career. She taught high school art in 7 different schools in 3 states. She says that after getting married every time her husband made a career move requiring her to help with the family income, God provided a teaching position for her! After twenty-four years of teaching art in public schools, she retired to travel with her husband and do her own art work.
In the following years Mary learned a new medium, sculpture. Mary says, “God has blessed me with many opportunities to learn and He has put people in my life who have taught and encouraged me. In 1987, I apprenticed with the sculptor, Barvo Walker, and learned the lost wax method of casting bronze. He encouraged me to create my own sculptures, and so I began sculpting my first piece called, “Work’s About Done.” I was so excited because my very first sculpture sold before it was even cast!”
Since then, she has sold her work in numerous galleries and art shows, has been commissioned by various organizations and her work can be found in many collectors’ homes. She states, “each of my sculptures is a limited edition and has a Scripture reference to help broaden the owner’s experience.
