Call Description

The Flint Print Club (FPC) at the Flint Institute of Arts Museum + Art School (FIA) seeks an artist printmaker to produce an exclusive print edition for the Club's members and the Museum's permanent collection.

In 2007, the Flint Print Club was established at the FIA, its mission to develop connoisseurship among its members and educate the general public about prints and printmaking. Each year the FPC commissions an artist to produce a print to augment both the FIA’s collection and the pursuit of personal collecting. In 2024 the Club evolved to better align with the value's of the museum and the diverse community it serves, with special interest in collaborating with emerging and mid-career artists. In this pursuit, the FIA launched a Call for Entry for the first time in the Club’s history, seeking new voices in printmaking to bring their craft and creativity to Flint. 2025 marks the 2nd annual call.

The Artist selected for the 2025 FPC Commission will produce an edition of 75 signed and numbered impressions for FPC members and the FIA; and an agreed upon number of artist proofs for the Artist. One print from the edition will be accessioned into the FIA's permanent collection.

The Artist will be asked to provide a proposal image and considerations like scale will be discussed ahead of production. It is advised that prints do not exceed 24x36 inches. The proposal must be approved by FIA Curatorial Staff and the Executive Director and an agreement detailing this will be signed before beginning production. Upon completion of the edition, the Artist will deliver the 75 impressions to the FIA, who assumes the right to reproduce its image for promotional and educational purposes, while the Artist is entitled to keep and distribute the artist proofs at their discretion. The Artist is not permitted to produce subsequent editions of the work after the completion of the Commission.

The Artist will deliver a lecture and demo as part of a one-time visit to the museum for programming associated with the FPC and its members. Additionally, the Artist will be expected to actively engage on social media platforms throughout the project to promote the production of the print, and the collaboration between the Artist and the FIA. Terms of engagement will be discussed between the Artist and FIA staff in advance.

The Artist will be paid a $5,000 USD honorarium for their participation in the 2025 Flint Print Club Commission. Another $1,500 USD is allocated to reimburse the Artist for supplies associated with the cost of production. Should the Artist choose to visit the FIA to give a talk and demo, an additional stipend of $1,200 USD will be paid to the Artist and travel expenses, including airfare, hotel, and some meals will be covered by the FIA. Shipping costs to deliver the final print edition will also be covered by the FIA.

Eligibility Criteria

Emerging and mid-career artists are encouraged to apply.

Artists must reside and be eligible to work in the United States or Canada.

All artworks submitted as part of the applicant’s portfolio must be original works of art. The majority of submissions must utilize a form of traditional hand printed media as their primary technique. 

Artwork created for the Flint Print Club Commission must utilize a form of traditional hand printed media as its primary technique, but may include digital output elements within the greater work. The commission may include but is not limited to: screen print, etching, engraving, drypoint, photopolymer, photogravure, collagraph, stone lithography, plate lithography, woodcut, linocut, and letterpress.

Art composed solely of inkjet, laser prints, pigmented prints, risograph, photocopy, will not be accepted. Giclée reproductions will also not be accepted.

An entry fee of $35 is required to submit an application. Funds raised by entry fees are used exclusively to facilitate programming related to the artist commission and the Flint Print Club. Only one submission may be entered per artist. Each submission requires at least ten and up to fifteen artworks. A paid submission does not guarantee a commission opportunity. Entry fees are non-refundable.

The 2025 Flint Print Club Commission will be juried by select FIA staff familiar with printmaking processes and history, including members of the Curatorial, Education, and Art School Departments.
