Our Mission
To provide residencies to artists from around the world to pursue their creative process on the shores of Lake Superior or the St. Mary’s River. Find photos and more information on our website (click here).
Summary
We have 4 residency opportunities between two different cabins. The Munuscong Mini Cabin can accommodate a single person or a couple (single lofted bed, no kids or pets) and the The Point Iroquois Beach Cabin can accommodate up to 3 people (kids and pets allowed).
Residency Requirements
SAAC will select resident artists ranging from photographers, visual artists and writers for a 7-14 day residency opportunities. Applications will be accepted from individuals, couples and cohorts of up to three people (two people for the Munuscong cabin). Individuals are permitted to have one guest. Artists of all ethnicities, cultures, and experiences are encouraged to apply.
During their residency, each artist will share their experience in one public program, demonstration, talk, workshop, etc at Sault Area Art Center located at 217 Ferris St, Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
Each artist will contribute one original piece of work representative of their residency to the permanent collection of the Sault Area Art Center. Donated pieces will be delivered within one year, framed, bound or otherwise gallery ready.
Munuscong Mini Cabin
The Munuscong Cabin on Rocky Point is located on a bay of the St. Mary’s River. This cabin has a lofted sleeping area, kitchenette, bathroom, sauna, and internet service. There is no studio space in the cabin, but we can accommodate by putting down a tarp and having an easel available in the heated, screened in porch. You will have the entire cabin to yourself. A dog will be on the property, however no pets are allowed in the cabin.
The cabin is located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula. It is 45 min. from the Mackinaw Bridge, 45 min. from Sault Saint Marie, 1 hour from Drummond Island, 2 hours from Tahquamenon Falls, and 30 min. from Cedarville, Hessel and DeTour. Between creations, enjoy hiking trails nearby, walk down to the water to swim or kayak, or have a bonfire by the river.
This cabin can accommodate two people, but no children due to the open ladder to the loft.
The Munuscong Mini Cabin is available for 2 residency experiences during a set of the following dates:
- 7 day stay: May 30th - June 4th
- 14 day stay between June 9th - July 5th (you select dates)
- 14 day stay between July 15th - August 7th (you select dates)
- 11 day stay: August 11th - August 22nd
Point Iroquois Beach Cabin
The Point Iroquois Beach Cabin is located on the shores of Lake Superior a short walk from Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Brimley, MI. It is a small, modern 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom cabin with a full kitchen and internet service. You will have the entire cabin to yourself.
There is a darkroom available close by. There is no studio space in the cabin, but we can accommodate by putting down a tarp and having an easel available in one of the rooms. Between creations enjoy hiking trails nearby, walk down to water to swim or kayak, or have a bonfire by the beach.
Lake Superior contains 10% of the freshwater in the world. The cabin is centrally located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula close to hiking trails and Lake Superior overlooks. It is one hour from Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish point, 30 minutes from the Sault Locks, 45 minutes from Mackinaw Island, 2 hours from Pictured Rocks and Kitch-iti-kipi springs and close to streams and waterfalls. The location is close to all the Upper Peninsula has to offer.
This cabin can accommodate up to three people.
The Point Iroquois Beach Cabin is available for 2 residency experiences over the following dates:
- 9 day stay: September 8th - 17th
- 9 day stay: October 19th - 28th
