Call Description

The Delaplaine Art Center, located in historic downtown Frederick, invites artists to submit proposals for solo or group exhibitions for one of our five galleries. Applications are reviewed by our Exhibition Selection Panel, comprised of artists, curators and arts professionals.

All media are encouraged.

Artworks submitted within the proposal should be original of the artist(s). No commercially made prints, giclees, or reproductions of an original work of art will be considered for exhibition.

We are currently scheduling exhibitions two years in advance.

Proposals are reviewed every other month according to the following schedule:

  • Received Jan 15–Mar 14: notified by April 8
  • Received Mar 15–May 14: notified by June 8
  • Received May 15–July 14: notified by August 8
  • Received July 15–Sept 14: notified by October 8
  • Received Sept 15–Nov 14: notified by December 8
  • Received Nov 15–Jan 14: notified by February 8

The fee for submission is $7 for Delaplaine Members and $37 for Non-Members

Eligibility Criteria

  • This Call is open for works in any media
  • There are no size restrictions for this call
  • Artworks created within the last 2 years are preferred
  • Artworks submitted within the proposal should be original of the artist(s). No commercially made prints, giclees, or reproductions of an original work of art will be considered for exhibition.
  • Artists can submit artworks that are not for sale.

Proposals will be considered based off the following criteria:

  • Enriching/Educational: Provides insight, perspective, understanding, awareness, or knowledge.
    • Does the work have the potential to enhance and expand the experience and awareness of the visual arts for the general public?
    • Is it relevant?
    • Does this proposal improve the balance of content and diversity among the proposed exhibitions
  • Original/Creative: Represents new ideas or visions while pushing creative boundaries.
    • Is the artwork original?
    • Is there a creative presence that achieves a unique aesthetic quality?
  • Comprehensive: A thorough execution throughout the entire body of work.
    • Will the work successfully communicate its message or purpose to the general public?
    • Does the artwork form a comprehensive and cohesive exhibit?
  • Physical Viability: Achievable physically and within the scope of our organization
    • Does the artwork have the ability to be displayed for the proposed period of time?
    • Is the size of the exhibition appropriate for our galleries? 25-2,000 sq. ft.?
    • Are there any practical challenges in hosting the exhibition such as working with lenders or unique installation requirements?
    • Additional costs such as shipping, insurance, security
  • Recommend acceptance overall: This exhibition should be approved or not approved.
    • Despite any personal objections, considering the support the Delaplaine staff can provide the artist and the community benefit from exhibiting this work- do you believe this exhibition should be approved?
