Call Description

Word and Image
Online Exhibition September 17, 2025 - October 17, 2025

Site:Brooklyn is pleased to open submissions for "Text and Image," a juried exhibition examining how artists navigate the complex relationship between written language and visual representation. Beginning with pictograms and continuing through the illuminated manuscripts of medieval scribes, where text and imagery merged into unified sacred objects, to the revolutionary typographic experiments of Dadaist collages, artists have long understood that text and image play off and interact with one another. Modern innovations have deepened these investigations: Jenny Holzer's LED installations transform public spaces into sites of textual encounter, while Barbara Kruger's bold interventions demonstrate how typography can function as both image and ideological weapon.

This exhibition seeks to showcase contemporary artists who continue this conversation, demonstrating how text-image relationships generate new forms of meaning and visual experience. We are looking for works across all mediums that highlight artists who treat text and image as related forces, allowing their interplay to drive conceptual and aesthetic development.

About the Juror: Caroline Goldstein is Currently the Managing Editor for Artnet. Goldstein has written art news for W magazine, Muckrack and other digital magazines. Goldstein worked at Osmos Gallery and International Print Center NY. She graduated from Sotheby's Institute of Art The Graduate School of Art and Its Markets in London and NYC, Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at The George Washington University

About the Gallery: Site:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions, selected by a cast of new jurors, solo artist features, and spotlights.
