Call Description
Project Summary
The Town of Silverthorne Art Board seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create an original mural or art installation on Silverthorne’s Recycling Center Fence. The mural should give a nod to the recycling center and sustainability efforts in Silverthorne and feature educational elements about recycling and the connection of recycling to our environment and where we live. The installation could also be a painted mural with three-dimensional elements. Examples and ideas of what the Board is looking for include, but are not limited to:
· the timeline of a recycled material and the process it goes through
· environmental message around protecting our environment
· connection of recycling and sustainability to water, Lake Dillon and the Blue River
· milk cap mosaics or flowers, or other examples of reusing materials for art
Artists are encouraged to also incorporate a community participation element into their proposal. This can take place during the creation or installation process, or as part of a recycling awareness event that will be held at the site in conjunction with the unveiling of the installation. The goal is to engage the public in meaningful ways that support environmental awareness and community connection.
This installation will be installed on the West-facing fence of the recycling center along River Road in Silverthorne, CO.
The installation will be viewed primarily by people dropping off their recycling or while driving by on the road to access recreational amenities such as the baseball fields, fishing on the Blue River, or access to the Blue River Trail recreational path. See pictures of the fence attached.
Mural Specifics
The fence designated for this installation is approximately 180 feet long and 8 feet high. Total square footage of fence is approximately 1,440 square feet. It is expected that this installation will cover at least 50% of this area.
Murals in the Town of Silverthorne may not include text that is more than 5% of overall design. Artist signature is allowed within this parameter.
Honorarium
The honorarium is $20,000 total which shall constitute full compensation for all services, goods, expenses, and materials to be performed and furnished in the design, creation, and installation of the exhibit. The honorarium will be paid 50% upon signing of contract and paid 50% upon installation completion.
Application Requirements
Artists are required to submit at least one and no more than three conceptual renderings of proposed artwork. Artists must also submit at least one and no more than four links to examples of their completed work that depict the artistic style they intend to use for the project.
Criteria used to select artwork includes, but is not limited to, suitability of design for site, aesthetic quality, broad-based interest and appeal for all ages, and quality of artist’s previous works.
Eligibility Criteria
The Art Board seeks artists in the Colorado region, as travel reimbursement funds are not available for this project. Artists outside of Colorado are welcome to apply if they are able to cover travel and lodging costs for the project.
