Call Description

The City of Coral Springs Public Art Committee will commission an artist for a large mural at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, a city organization that is a cultural beacon serving Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade counties. The museum celebrates artistic expression in its various forms, from cutting-edge exhibitions to thought-provoking installations. 

This artwork should use the full height and width of the available wall space (approximately 17 feet in height by 64 feet in width). The artwork should be engaging, encourage pedestrian activity, and have a dramatic visual aspect to it.

It is imperative the mural is completed by February 1, 2026. Proposals and contracts will not be approved if the artist is unable to complete work by due date. 

Location Description

The artwork will be located at the Coral Springs Museum of Art’s new downtown space on the corner of Sample Road and University Drive, within the Cornerstone development. This space is within the redeveloped downtown area where the City hosts many events throughout the year. The museum will be surrounded by residential apartments, businesses, restaurants, near Coral Springs City Hall. The mural wall is located along the main sidewalk on Sample Road, on the exterior of the Museum of Art. Sample Road is a main road which has a considerable amount of pedestrian and vehicular traffic at the heart of Coral Springs. For more information on Coral Springs Museum of Art, visit:

Anticipated Project Schedule

  1. Call Published: July 25, 2025
  2. Artist Applications Due: August 22, 2025
  3. Artist Selected: September 15, 2025
  4. City Commission Approval: October 15, 2025
  5. Artwork Installation Completed: No later than February 1, 2026
     

Artwork Purchase Budget

The total budget for this project is $75,000. The selected artist’s established budget for the project —including permitting, lighting, and other site work (if applicable) — shall not exceed $75,000.  The price will include all fees, labor, transportation, installation costs, as well as any costs associated with lodging or travel for the dedication ceremony. Within the fee, the artist will make recommendations to the city regarding the design of the permanent site and present a public lecture regarding public art.

Please provide a detailed cost breakdown, including all estimated labor, material, transportation, and installation costs, as well as any other costs that may be incurred. The proposed budget should demonstrate how funds will be allocated across the project’s key phases or deliverables.

Proposal Process

The call is open to professional visual artists with experience implementing their ideas and work in the public realm.  

The application process is managed by the City of Coral Springs. The Coral Springs Public Art Committee serves as the selection committee and makes a recommendation of approval to the City Commission. The City Commission makes the final selection approval.

Selection Criteria

The Public Art Selection Committee shall consider the following:

  1. Appropriateness of the artwork to the goals of the program
  2. Appropriateness of the artwork to the site and environmental conditions
  3. Experience and other qualifications of the artist
  4. Quality of the work
  5. Location of the artist
  6. Costs of commissioning the artwork
  7. Technical Considerations and Feasibility: Including the artist’s artistic history and experience in completing public art projects within the timeline and budget, as well as the sustainability of the project.
  8. Safety and Maintenance Requirements: Artwork should be durable, meet the requirements of insurance policies and be resistant to theft and or vandalism. Artist must apply UV resistant sealant to the finished product. Materials should require minimal periodic maintenance and be readily available if conservation or restoration is necessary. Artwork should meet the Florida Building Code and Hurricane Resistant Requirements.

Application Requirements

  1. Letter of intent. The letter should be no more than one page in length, include the artist’s contact information, experience with similar projects, and explanation of the proposed project.
  2. Artist’s resume. A current professional resume must be submitted for each artist or member of a proposal team.
  3. Proposed concept sketch. Sketches must include a scaled plan of the proposed location, and a plan and dimensioned elevations of the concept. Sketches must also include perspectives of the concept, and all sketches shall be no larger than 11” x 17”.  The drawings should include information regarding materials, colors and any other relevant details.  Optionally, a 3D computer model and digital renderings would be desirable permitting a full understanding of the concept.
  4. Budget. An itemized project budget worksheet (provided) MUST accompany all proposals.
  5. No more than ten (10) digital color images of the artist’s representative work. File names should include the title of the artwork and artist or team. Artists applying as a team may submit 10 digital images of each artist’s work. Slide images will not be accepted.
  6. Annotated image list. The image list must include a brief description of each image stating the title, date, medium, size, location, and commission budget, if the piece was commissioned.
  7. Maintenance Plan. Detailed instructions for regular maintenance and cleaning of the artwork. Final color and material book (including electronic or hard copy) must be provided for maintenance of the mural.

Artist Requirement Once Selected

  • Transportation and off-truck loading of materials to the site
  • Fabrication of the artwork and preparation of site as needed
  • In-person attendance at the dedication/unveiling ceremony
  • One public lecture or program at the Coral Springs Museum of Art
  • Grant permission to the City to capture videos of the work while being made

Eligibility Criteria

The project is open to professional visual artists with experience implementing their ideas and work in the public realm. Artist or Professional Artist means a practitioner in the visual arts, generally recognized by critics and peers as a professional of serious intent and ability. Indications of a person’s status as a professional artist include, but are not limited to, portfolio containing visual examples of past projects, income realized through the sole commission of artwork, frequent or consistent art exhibitions, placement of artwork in public institutions or museums, receipt of honors and awards, and training in the arts.       

The preferred artist will have an extensive background in civic and community engagement to create innovative public art project(s) that foster community connections. The preferred artist will have experience in designing, creating, and installing permanent public artworks.

Artists who are immediate family or business partners of members of the Public Art Committee or program staff are not eligible.
