Call Description

The commissioned bus shelter sculpture for ‘Cool Stop’ is to be a creative solution sculptural bus shelter providing significant shade at the bus stop of any design, shape, or form. The selected artist/team will be responsible for fabrication (including all structural and maintenance documentation) and delivery. Art in Public Places staff and team will be responsible for installation under advisement of the artist/artist team.

The Art in Public Places Commission in partnership is requesting qualifications and professional samples of past public artworks to be considered for the project. From the RFQ, three finalists may be selected to present design concepts for this project.  Finalists will be paid an honorarium to develop and present their artwork design concepts. 

While existing artworks or designs may be ultimately suggested for commission, artist and artist teams looking to participate should submit past work only and not submit project proposals in this stage of request for qualifications RFQ process.

 

Budget

The budget for the artwork is up to and not to exceed $25,000. This budget includes all costs for design, fabrication, and transportation of the bus shelter, including but not limited to all design fees, fabrication, material costs, professional fees, travel and lodging during design, fabrication, insurance, overhead, and a minimum of 10% contingency. 

The City of Longmont Art in Public Places will be responsible for site preparation, foundation, installation costs, including all contractors and equipment. 

This project does not include lighting. The artist will be encouraged but not required to attend the dedication event.

Three shortlisted Semi-Finalists will receive additional project details, site specifications, design considerations and a $750 stipend for a project proposal.

 

Anticipated timeline*:

  • Call, ideally, closes September*
  • Semi-Finalist selection mid/ late September
  • Finalist Proposals due mid-October
  • Contract period late October/early November
  • Ideal installation spring/summer 2026

Application Requirements

All RFQ applications must be submitted through the CAFÉ online portal www.callforentry.org. If you need assistance utilizing this portal, please contact the Art in Public Places Administrator. AIPP@LongmontColorado.gov

All applications must include:

  • At least 5 images and up to 10 fabricated and installed public artwork completed within the past ten years which highlight your previous accomplishment(s) with public art installations of similar appropriate scale – ideally, bus stop and/or sculpture intended for shade.
  • No more than 2 images per project are permitted.  Do not submit images of past proposals that have not been fabricated and executed.
  • Image Minimum: 5 Maximum: 10 images
  • Your professional résumé or CV, specifically highlighting public artwork commissions and/or sculpture installations.
  • Three professional references
  • Artists may include an artist statement, though not required for the call to artists RFQ submission.

Applications will remain open until sufficient entries have been received for a successful project review and consideration – as determined by the Art in Public Places Administrator.

Final project work scope will include fabrication, documentation and delivery. AIPP will be responsible for installation.

Eligibility Criteria

This project is open to professional artists residing in the United States, with slight preference given to artists living or working within the state of Colorado, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, gender variance, sexual orientation, national origin, age, religion, marital status, political opinion, or affiliation, mental or physical disability.

If applying as a team, please assign a team leader to respond to the submission questions, communicate which artist(s) are responsible for each of the work samples, and submit one CV/résumé for the team with one CV/résumé page per team member.
