VISUAL ARTS

Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges sponsor a district-wide competition to encourage and recognize student achievement in the following categories:

  • Two-Dimensional Art
  • Three-Dimensional Art 

VISUAL ARTS - GENERAL INFORMATION

All visual art entered into the competition must have been made when the student was enrolled in a MCCCD credit course, during the summer, fall 2013 or spring 2014 semesters. The winning entries will be displayed at the Orpheum Theatre for the MCCCD Artist of Promise event on April 9, 2014. For the exhibition, the two-dimensional work must be framed and wired. Three-dimensional work must meet space and handling restrictions. No special hanging requirements can be considered due to exhibit area restrictions.

Visual Arts Entry deadline:  Friday, February 14, 2014

Guidelines:

  • Exhibition selection will be by digital file upload as a JPG or JPEG format.
  • File dimension: No smaller than 1920 pixels on the longest side.
  • Maximum size of pieces for flat art should be no longer than 30" x 40" and weighing no more than 30 pounds.
  • Maximum size of 3D artwork must fit on a pedestal that is 20" x 20" and weigh no more than 60 pounds.
  • Artists (if work is selected) are responsible to prepare their artwork for exhibition. Prior to exhibition, all exhibiting student artists will be provided a Liability Waiver Form and Talent Release Form that should be signed, witnessed, and submitted to MCLI.

MUSIC - GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • To participate in the competition, you must be a registered student at a Maricopa Community College.

  • Solo competition entrants must be enrolled in private music instruction specific to that category at their college.

  • Music Theater Performance Competition entrants must be enrolled in a music theater class or private voice lessons at their college.

  • Ensemble competition entrants must be registered for at least one credit hour in a Music Performance (MUP) or Music Theory (MTC) Course during the spring 2014 semester at any of the Maricopa Community Colleges.

  • Composition competition entrants must be enrolled in Composition lessons at their college.

  • Prior First Place competition winners in the solo and Composition categories are not eligible to participate in the same solo or Composition category again.

For solo and ensemble competitions, you will be notified one-week prior to the competition with your assigned performance date and time.

Music Competition and Music Instrumental Entry deadline:  Modified entry date Tuesday Feburary 18, 2014.  Although the student registration for the competition is online, the adjudication will be in person for all areas except the Composition category.

Please Note: First Place Music Winners in each category will perform at the Artist of Promise Gala event, on April 8, 2014 (rehearsal) and April 9, 2014 (performance) at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix. All First Place Music winners are expected to be available for both the dress rehearsal and the performance. All awards will be presented at this event.

MUSIC INSTRUMENTAL:

There are five categories:

  • Instrumental Solo

  • Piano Solo

  • Guitar Solo

  • Instrumental Ensemble

  • Jazz Ensemble

Important Information: Competition date is February 28, at Phoenix College. You will be notified of your competition time by February 24.

  • Appropriate dress for competition is required.

  • Check-in rooms and individual competition times will be announced.

  • Check-in at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled performance time.

  • Arrive early to ensure use of practice room.

Instrumental Solo:

  • Maximum of 8 minutes; sonata or concerto will be allowed with proper musical editorial cuts.

  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music.

Guitar Solo:

  • Performance from memory only

  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music.

  • Work performed must be published repertoire, no original compositions or arrangements

  • Maximum of 10 minutes; one or two selections allowed; no concertos.

Piano Solo:

  • Performance from memory only

  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music.

  • Maximum of 12 minutes

  • One or two solo selections allowed; no concertos.

Instrumental Ensemble:

  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music.

  • An ensemble of two to nine members may be formed for the sole purpose of this competition.

  • Maximum of 10 minutes.

  • All participants in the performance will be judged as members of the ensemble, and must therefore be students. There are no accompanists in this category.

Jazz Ensemble:

  • Bring an unmarked original edition of your music.

  • An ensemble of two to nine members may be formed for the sole purpose of this competition.

  • Maximum of 10 minutes.

  • All participants in the performance will be judged as members of the ensemble, and must therefore be students. There are no accompanists in this category.

MUSIC COMPOSITION:

  • Students must be enrolled in private Composition lessons at their school.

  • Students may submit only one entry.

  • Piece must be an original composition for acoustic and/or electronic instrument(s).

  • A computer-generated score is required (no handwritten scores will be accepted) and must be uploaded with the application (PDF format only).

  • An audio recording of the composition must be uploaded with the application (.mp3 format only).

  • Electronic compositions without a score must substitute a word-processed, double-spaced, narrative explaining the compositional process (no more than two pages) in lieu of the score.

  • Improvisational compositions will not be accepted.

First place winner will need to provide performer(s) and/or electronic instrument(s) for concert event.
