Call Description

Functional Aesthetics: Contemporary Art in Use
March 10 - March 28, 2026
Juror & Curator: Raluca Anchidin

Atlantic Gallery, located in the historic Landmark Arts Building in Chelsea, invites artists to submit work for the upcoming juried show, Functional Aesthetics: Contemporary Art in Use.

Functional Aesthetics: Contemporary Art in Use will bring together inventive, hand-made, and uniquely designed works that expand the definition of functionality in contemporary art and everyday life, exploring the intersection of art, craft, and design. Pottery that transforms into feel-good art, headwear that doubles as sculpture, furniture that merges aesthetic experimentation with everyday use: these are the types of practices we aim to highlight, reminding us that art is not only something to be looked at, but something to be lived with.

Key themes include:

Exciting new ideas for contemporary living from emerging and mid-career artists
Working with passion and purpose in mind
Slow production, repetition, and quality over quantity

We welcome submissions of:

Jewelry, clothing, and other wearable art
Kitchenware and utensils
Lighting, ceramics, and glasswork
Textiles such as blankets, rugs, or woven works
Toys, furniture and other household objects
Stationery, paper goods, and artist books
Musical instruments and sound-producing works

Weekend Program

In addition to the opening reception, the exhibition will host a one-day event (3/14) designed to bring the artworks to life. Visitors will be invited to experience pieces in use - drinking from a ceramic cup, trying on jewelry, or sitting with a piece of furniture - turning the gallery into a living space shaped by the work itself. The program creates a relaxed, “market-meets-salon” style atmosphere where audiences can converse with participating artists, explore and connect with the works before making a purchase. This exhibition affirms that creativity is accessible to everyone and celebrates the vibrancy of functional art as both an autonomous artistic practice and a form of daily experience.

The juror and curator, Raluca Anchidin will award one artist the prize of feature on the Atlantic Gallery website and in the gallery newsletter, plus a one-week social media takeover of the Atlantic Gallery Instagram account, at a future date.

A PDF catalog of the exhibition will be provided to all accepted artists. A print version will also be available for purchase.

Work Requirements:

Accepted artworks must be available for display and sale during the exhibiting period.
For 3D work that is suspended, detailed instructions for hanging (with photo) and hanging hardware are required. Suspended work may not exceed 15lbs. If your work has to be displayed on a pedestal, stand or display rack, please specify in your application if you have one that you can bring, or whether you require one from the gallery. Work that is not ready for installation will not be displayed. All work submitted must be for sale. Atlantic Gallery will take a 40% commission on any work sold
