Call Description

Theme: Love welcomes artwork that centers on the positive, life-affirming qualities of loving and experiencing love. Artists might consider attributes such as affection, care, belonging, harmony, gratitude, or shared presence. Romantic, familial, communal, or self-directed love may all be explored — with an emphasis on positive resonance.

This exhibition embraces a wide spectrum of artistic approaches and interpretations. Works may convey love through color, form, movement, or material; through symbolic, conceptual, or narrative means; or through abstract, minimalist, or experimental expressions in any visual-art medium.

Application Requirements

• San Francisco Bay Area artists only (artist must live within 100 miles from San Rafael, California).
  • Refunds will not be given to applications who don’t qualify.
• Open to most subject matter including abstraction.
• Open to all visual arts media including sculpture. Video artists must include dimensions of equipment, such as a monitor, in submission; and must supply all equipment—including headphones—for the exhibition. Projections and speaker audio are prohibited.
• Original artwork only. No giclées or reproductions. Editions are welcome; for example a limited run of prints.
• Images of explicit sexual content or violence will not be considered.
• Size limit: artwork must not exceed 72” including frame, stand, and all materials.
• Submissions must not have previously exhibited in the AWD 1337 Gallery.
• Apply through CallForEntry.org. AWD will not accept hardcopy, email, or disk submissions.

Exhibit Schedule

• February 7–March 21: exhibit dates
• January 9–13: artworks selection by Juror
• January 8: Entries due via CallForEntry.org
• January 15–16: Notification by email
• January 29–31: 11am–4pm: Deliver artwork
• February 13, March 13, 5–8pm: Reception and 2nd Friday Art Walk
• January 29–31, 12–5:30 pm: Artwork pick up

Eligibility Criteria

Delivery of Invited Work: 

• Deliver on the dates provided. If you can’t, you may appoint a representative to deliver for you, but the artist must email or call ahead to provide the representative’s name.
• Artwork(s) must be hand delivered to Art Works Downtown at 1337 Fourth St., San Rafael between the hours stated under Exhibit Schedule.
• All work must be ready for installation. Wall-hung artwork must be securely wired. Artwork must be easy–and ready–to install.
• No substitutes will be accepted for works approved by the juror.
• The artist must complete and sign the Consignment Contract during delivery.
• Please deliver an artist statement and resume for visitors to view in the exhibit binder. We do not print these materials for you.
• Please be patient, you may need to wait for staff to finish processing other artists who are delivering and picking up.
• Parking: Paid parking can be found on the surrounding streets and in two garages—one block away—on C Street. The garages are free on Saturdays. Do not double-park in front of the Gallery, it is dangerous.

Retrieval of Artwork

Artists who do not retrieve their work will be charged a storage fee of $5.00 per day. Works remaining after 30 days will become the property of Art Works Downtown. Please note that other artists will deliver and pick up during the same hours. You may need to wait for staff to finish processing other artists. Paid parking can be found on the surrounding streets and in two garages one block away on C Street.

Sales: 

• Art Works Downtown (AWD) accepts a 40% donation upon sale. AWD processes sales as follows. All payments will be made to Art Works Downtown. AWD then reports the sales tax and passes the net sale to the artist. The artist is responsible for donating 40% of the net sale total to AWD. It is not the artist’s responsibility to report sales tax.
• Sales will be paid to artists as soon as possible after the exhibition ends, which may take up to 30 days.
