Call Description
Philadelphia Youth Basketball (PYB) is excited to announce a Request for Proposals (RFP) for artists to create a signature mural at the Alan Horwitz “Sixth Man” Center, made possible by the generous support of the Connelly Foundation. This mural will celebrate the historical richness, civic identity, and cultural pride of Philadelphia while inspiring the thousands of young people and families who utilize our space each year.
We invite talented graphic artists, particularly, but not limited to, local, BIPOC, and those experienced in community-engaged practices, to submit proposals for this vibrant mural project aimed at fusing art, history, and youth empowerment.
Project Concept: “The Philadelphia Timeline Wall”
The mural will consist of two primary layers of storytelling:
The Contour of the Philadelphia Skyline (Top Layer):
A continuous contour line drawing of the Philadelphia skyline, featuring iconic structures such as City Hall and the Comcast Technology Center. This design symbolizes the city’s architectural milestones and its transformation over time, echoing the line art found in the PYB logo.
Thematic Timeline Below the Skyline (Bottom Layer):
This layer will present a visual timeline that expands on one of several proposed themes:
The History of Philadelphia’s Neighborhoods
Famous Accomplishments Born in Philadelphia
Artists will utilize graphic design, archival photography, and digital illustration to capture key events, individuals, and movements integral to Philadelphia’s rich history and to PYB’s mission.
Budget Overview:
The total budget for the artist portion of this project is $12,000 and will cover:
Artist Fees: For design, consultation, revisions, and collaboration with our art consultant.
Archival Photo Rights and Licensing: When applicable.
Digitization and Printing of Decals: For the final mural output.
Materials and Installation: All physical components required for the mural.
Youth and Community Engagement Sessions: workshops and feedback sessions with the artist (approximately 4-6 hours)
Unveiling event time for the artist (approximately 2 hours)
