Call Description

Open Call for Art - A Place at the Table - 2D Gallery Wall Exhibition

The Southern California Women’s Caucus for Art (SCWCA) invites artists to submit work for the exhibition A Place at the Table 2D Artwork. Inspired by The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago, this exhibition explores themes of inclusion, visibility, equity, and the ongoing reexamination of historical and cultural narratives.

Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly. Submissions may address concepts such as presence and absence, access and exclusion, identity, memory, labor, community, and the reclamation or creation of space. The notion of “the table” may be approached literally or conceptually, and work may reflect personal, social, or political perspectives.

SCWCA seeks work that contributes to a thoughtful and rigorous dialogue, acknowledging the historical context of women’s contributions to the arts while engaging with contemporary perspectives.

Juror: Karla Funderburk - Artist and Gallerist, Owner of Matter Studio Gallery, Los Angeles,Ca 90019

At Matter Studio Gallery, our mission is to provide a vital, dynamic and inclusive space for both emerging and well-established local Artists to present their diverse experiences, cultures, perspectives, and mediums in order to build and engage our ever expanding Art Community.

My art practice, my purpose and my intention, revolves around my exploration, evaluation and expanding perception of our environment and our interconnectedness to the multi-verse we inhabit. I have always been fascinated with nature, science and our ever expanding comprehension of the laws of nature. As I discover more truths of the world we inhabit, I recognize the reflective nature between the micro and the macro. As an example, first I learned about String Theory, then M-Theory, and then the simultaneity of Multiple-Verse Theory. The concepts that all things are formed from the same elements and the same matter and that we evolve from the same constructs, and that this interconnectedness exists within all forms, both animate and inanimate states. This truth informs the foundations to all my art and to all facets of my life.

My mixed media sculptures are influenced and respond to this unified oneness. Particularly, the Law of the Conservation of Energy, which states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed only transformed. My inspiration stems from this truth that we are all co-creators of all that exists, everyone and everything consisting of that same matter, that energy, that vibration, transforming and redefining ourselves and our multiverse. The language in my artwork and in my life expresses our process of co-creation and co-existence as we share that same one breath, that same ONE MATTER, we are united in this truth.
