Call Description
Harmony is often hard to achieve. But let's be honest: Do we always want harmony? How tensions are resolved, make peace with, or completely defy opposition can be more enlightening. We want the clash. We want the contradiction. Let's see the fight!
CONFLICT OF INTERESTS is about friction. It is about using the “wrong” material on purpose. It is about the disconnect between what something looks like and what it says.
What happens when something soft delivers a punch? When something elegant gets loud? When beauty carries a threat? When motivations conflict with intention?
We want the moment when the viewer feels the tension before they can explain it.
Think about:
Mutually exclusive ideas sharing one surface
Fragile materials holding heavy concepts
Matter and anti matter swirling in the same visual soup
Consider the unexpected:
- Aggressive needlepoint.
- Violent calligraphy.
- Pastel apocalypse scenes.
We are especially interested in work where the medium makes the message louder. Where the choice of material creates tension. Where the viewer feels the disconnect and leans in closer.
This call is limited to analog, materially driven practices. Painting, drawing, carving, fiber, textile, printmaking, assemblage, sculpture, mixed media rooted in physical process. No digital work. No digital manipulation. No AI.
CONFLICT OF INTERESTS celebrates the spark that happens when opposites attract, collide, and express their struggle together.
Application Requirements
• Provide high-resolution images (JPEG/PNG), an brief artist statement regarding each work (150 words).
• All accepted works must be ready to install or hang. Artists are responsible for shipping/delivery. However, this gallery is committed to keeping artist costs to display down as much as possible. Call or email me, the gallerist. In other words, I enjoy stretching canvas for large rolled works which would otherwise be unshippable.
Eligibility Criteria
Open to professional and emerging artists. Eligible works include painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, collage, assemblage, textile, ceramics, photography (film-based or darkroom), and other physically produced processes. Digital artwork, digital manipulation, and AI-generated work will not be considered.
