Call Description

“The Weight of Air”

Juror: Cathrine Edlinger-Kunze

Even though air is invisible, it shapes how we experience every place we enter. Temperature, humidity, light, sound, and even memory fill the atmosphere around us. This exhibition looks for artworks that make viewers feel the emotional or physical presence of air—its weight, its stillness, or its movement.

Rather than showing air directly, the artworks reveal it through atmosphere:

  • drifting light
  • quiet landscapes
  • fog or haze
  • subtle motion
  • traces of human presence.

Together, these works explore the emotional essence of place—how environments carry mood, memory, and sensation. A room, a landscape, or even an empty space can feel heavy, calm, tense, or sacred depending on the atmosphere surrounding it.

By translating the unseen qualities of air into visual, spatial, or sensory experiences, the artists invite viewers to become more aware of the environments they inhabit and the invisible forces that shape our perception of place.
