Call Description

The SWOCC Artist in Residence Program is an opportunity to create a more diverse campus culture and to provide opportunities for professional artists to engage with community college students and to enhance public awareness of the arts.

Southwestern Oregon Community College is currently accepting applications for the 26-27 Academic year with an application deadline of April 30, 2026 to be considered for the upcoming academic year.

This program supports the development of new work by artists that can benefit from the educational and financial support of this grant. We seek risk-takers with strong technical expertise and conceptual rigor in one or more of the following areas of specialization: painting in any medium, photography, mixed media, installation art, or bronze casting.

The Residency:

The SWOCC Artist-in-Residence receives

·         a monthly stipend of $1,600

·         studio access (located within the college’s art studios and Coos Art Museum studio)

·         on-campus housing including a 10 meal per week meal plan at our campus dining services

·         an exhibition at the Eden Gallery on the SWOCC campus

The residency is a 9-month commitment. The selected candidate is expected to live on campus for the entire residency, to develop and teach two or more classes or workshops per term for Southwestern students, in addition to developing and teaching at least one workshop per term for the Coos Art Museum Studio.  The guest artist will also work with campus and community stakeholders to envision ways that the arts can be made more accessible and available to all in the college’s service district. The resident shall have an exhibition of their work in the term following the residency at the Eden Gallery. The $1,600 monthly stipend covers all necessary artist materials, travel, shipping, and living expenses for the duration of the residency.

Application Requirements

•         Completed SWOCC Guest Artist in Residence Application Form (attached)

•         Current Artist CV

•         10 digital images, labelled with number, your name, titles, dimensions, materials, date of completion, and any additional description needed to explain the work

•         One-page statement of intent: a brief artist statement, how your work addresses applied design, and your expectations for this residency

•         One-page proposal for classes and workshops. It should be a mix of lectures, studio production, and collaborative research that focuses on areas related to and expanded from your artistic interests and pursuits

•         Names and contact information for two professional references

Eligibility Criteria

A successful applicant will have a wide range of skill sets and be eager to share their expertise in an academic studio environment. Chosen residents will be artists and practitioners who have a mature and developed body of work, proven experience of working directly with undergraduate students. They will have proven technical proficiency in their field and be self-sufficient in operating related facilities. Priority will be given to 2D Visual Artists, such as those working in painting, drawing, watercolor, gouache etc.

United States residents and international residents are encouraged to apply; international residents are responsible for obtaining legal status for residency during the period. Students enrolled in at SWOCC are ineligible candidates.
