Call Description

Blue Line Arts in Roseville, CA presents an exciting new exhibition highlighting adornments as art. Art and clothing have a distinct relationship, one that allows for people to express themselves in a means that transcends fashion and transforms fine art into kinetic expressions activated by the implied human form. Wearable art has a rich history that dates back centuries, but made itself known to the American zeitgeist in the 1970s, fueled by hippie and mod subcultures, and alongside craftivism, fiber arts and feminist art. In recent years, the trend of upcycling has turned discarded materials into fine art wearables that speak to the environmental impacts of the fashion industry.

We are looking for works that honor this history and give rise to the endless possibilities of wearable art in our current culture. Our world is increasingly fast-paced and mass-produced, with industries like fast-fashion shifting our relationship to clothing from one of appreciation to commodification. In response, many artists have turned towards the handmade, intentional quality of crafting, largely involving wearable art pieces. We are looking to highlight artists working within this cross-section of fine art, fashion, and craft to showcase pieces that use the body and its vestments as a canvas. Blue Line Arts invites artists to create unique expressions that challenge the traditional confines of fine art and create pieces that adorn!

Adorned Intentions will be juried by Blue Line Arts’ very own Programs and Operations Manager, Adriana Griffin. Griffin is a multidisciplinary artist based in the Sacramento region, working in silversmithing, jewelry, mixed media, costuming, and cosplay. She holds a BFA in Studio Art from California State University, Sacramento. Her practice explores storytelling through wearable forms, combining enamel, stone, and material experimentation with character-driven design. She has participated in and has won awards in exhibitions including the Mother Lode Exhibition at the Mills Station Arts & Culture Center and the California State Fair. She is currently exhibiting in State Fair: Growing American Craft at the Renwick Gallery, part of the Smithsonian Institution. Griffin also contributes to the regional arts community through her work with Blue Line Arts.
