Call Description
THEME
This is an open-theme call. Artists are encouraged to create work that is visually compelling, community-minded, and well-suited for public display.
Suggested themes and concepts include:
- Community and connection
- Nature, color, and pattern
- Movement, energy, and transformation
- Celebrating Joplin’s identity in creative ways
Both literal and abstract interpretations are welcome.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Selected artworks will be reproduced as vinyl wraps and installed on three-dimensional utility boxes. Artists are not required to design directly within a template but should keep the overall box format in mind when creating their work.
When developing your design, please consider:
- How the artwork will appear when wrapped around multiple sides of a box
- Whether the design works best as a continuous wrap or as a composition focused on one primary side
- Creating bold, clear imagery that is easily visible from a distance
Avoiding overly fine details that may be lost when the image is enlarged - How elements of the design may align, continue, or transition across edges and corners
Please note: Utility boxes include functional elements such as vents, handles, locks, access panels, and meters that cannot be covered and may interrupt portions of the final design.
Templates are provided for reference only to help visualize proportions and layout. Finalists will be asked to provide high-resolution original artwork, which will be professionally adapted for production. Please contact Spiva at 417-623-0183 if you have any questions.
