Call Description

Red Springs Artspace announces a call for entries for 575 | Recognition, a juried exhibition. On December 18, 2025, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina achieved full federal recognition through the signing of the Lumbee Fairness Act—a historic milestone after a 137-year struggle for formal acknowledgment as a sovereign tribal nation. Known as the People of the Dark Water, the Lumbee are the largest tribe east of the Mississippi River, with their primary homeland in Robeson County, North Carolina.

We at Red Springs Artspace, located in Robeson County, extend our heartfelt congratulations to our Lumbee neighbors on this long-awaited achievement. To honor their rich culture, history, and resilience, we are proud to host a juried art show dedicated to Lumbee themes, stories, and artistic expressions. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate together through art. The show is open to everyone. You don't have to be a member of the Lumbee Tribe to submit a work to this competition.

The exhibition will be held June 24 through July 8 at Red Springs Artspace, 200 S. Main Street in Red Springs, NC.

To be eligible for prizes, all works, whether figurative or relatively abstract, must take the Lumbee as their theme.

Jurors:

Nancy Strickland Chavis, the Director and Curator of the Museum of the Southeast American Indian at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke

Harlen Chavis Jr., Lumbee Tribe THPO (Tribal Historic Preservation Officer) and artist

Awards:
