Call Description
LINE by LINE
Gainesville Fine Arts Association | GFAA Gallery
5th National Biennial Juried Exhibition
A line is the most basic visual element - a dot taking a walk (Paul Klee.) It defines shapes, implies movement, and creates structure. But beyond the visual arts, a line separates, connects, measures, and marks.
The Gainesville Fine Arts Association (GFAA) invites artists to submit work for Line By Line, an all-medium exhibition exploring the multifaceted interpretations of the word “line.” We encourage artists to interpret “line” broadly.
Consider…
- Conceptual/implied lines: The use of invisible lines, arranging objects, or creating implied paths to guide the viewers eye. Trajectories, borders, horizons, paths.
- Physical/literal lines: the use of wire, string, shadows, textual lines, threads, fibers, contours, structural lines
- Metaphorical lines: lines of communication, lines of thought, dividing lines, connecting lines, generational lines. Lines can suggest setting a limit, violating a boundary, being in agreement or taking a risk. Consider the meaning of “drawing a line in the sand”, “crossing the line”, “in line with”, “on the line”, or “end of the line”.
