The LP Shelby Project will consist of eleven fiberglass replicas of long playing phonograph record albums decorated by participating artists and publicly displayed in Shelby and surrounding Cleveland County, North Carolina. The project will last for approximately five-six months, ending in the fall of 2014.

Participation in the LP Shelby project is open to local, regional, and national artists of all backgrounds, whether professional or amateur.  At least one artist selected to participate will be a high school student artist.  Applications for selection to participate in the LP Shelby Project are due by March 7, 2014.  A Selection Committee will review all applications submitted in compliance with the requirements set forth below and on March 13, 2014 will select eleven successful applicants to participate as artists in the LP Shelby project.  The Selection Committee will notify successful applicants on March 14, 2014.

LP Shelby will provide each of the eleven participating artists with a fiberglass replica of a long playing phonograph record album which will be three feet in diameter.  The albums will be decorated by the participating artists and when delivered and accepted by LP Shelby, will be mounted on stands and displayed throughout Shelby and Cleveland County, North Carolina. Each LP will feature one of the following Don Gibson hits: "Oh Lonesome Me," "Who Cares," "Sweet Dreams," "Look Who's Blue," "Give Myself A Party," "I Can't Stop Loving You," "Lonesome Number One," "Bring Back Your Love To Me," "Just One Time," "Blue Blue Day," and "Too Soon To Know." Please note due to duplicate song choices by artists, you may be chosen but asked to design an LP for another song. Successful applicants must deliver decorated albums to LP Shelby on or before June 12, 2014.

Each application and the materials submitted with it will be reviewed by the Selection Committee for artistic merit, creativity, durability in an outdoor setting and compliance with the criteria in this section. Each applicant will be required to submit a proposal for the design of his or her album with the application that includes a detailed drawing of the concept, using the template for the album provided. Each artist agrees that his or her proposed design will comply with the criteria and that if selected will deliver his or her album decorated as proposed.  Each successful applicant may decorate his or her album using any medium; however, the artist may not alter the shape or structure of the fiberglass album provided by LP Shelby. All proposed designs and the decorated albums based on the designs must be suitable in the sole discretion of the Selection Committee for public display and may not contain any material which in the discretion of the Selection Committee may be found to be offensive or inconsistent with the mission of LP Shelby.

Participating artists will receive (1) an honorarium of $75 in gift certificates for supplies, (2) credit on the album decorated by him or her and credit in media, all in the customary form and manner, and (3) each album will be publicly displayed for the duration of the LP Shelby Project.  Each participating artist will also be featured on the Don Gibson Theatre website and play a part in creating a one-of-a-kind piece of art seen by thousands of people who visit or live in Shelby.

Each participating artist shall at his or her expense complete the decorated album and deliver it to LP Shelby at its designated distribution point on or before June 12, 2014.  LP Shelby reserves the right to reject or require changes to any decorated album not created in compliance with the proposed design submitted and approved by the Selection Committee or the design criteria set forth above.
