Call Description

The Washington Print Foundation is pleased to present the 28th annual Peggy Doole National Small Works Exhibition to be held July 31st to August 31st at the long-established Washington Printmakers Gallery in Washington, DC.  This a national juried exhibition of contemporary printmaking that includes hand-pulled prints, screen prints, digital prints, fine art photographs, and three-dimensional work with print components.

This year's juror is Mark Jenkins who is a veteran freelancer who has written for NPR's "All Things Considered," Washington City Paper, Time Out New York,WAMU-FM's "Metro Connection," Rolling Stone, Adweek, Slate, and many other outlets. He reviewed visual art for the Washington Post for nearly 20 years, and currently reviews local gallery and museum shows in an online newsletter, discerningeye.substack.com. He is also a graphic designer who was art director of Washington City Paper from 1987 to 1995.

Exhibition Schedule:

•     July 3rd   Deadline for entries (11:59 PM)         

•     July 10th   All accepted entrants will be notified by email.         

•    July 13th – 26th   Shipped and hand-delivered work to arrive in Washington. Please note the gallery hours if hand delivered.

       •   July 28th  Installation of show

•   July 30th   Exhibition Opens.        

•    August 1st   2-5- pm.   Opening reception &      awards.            

•    August 30th   Last day of exhibition.        

•    August 30th   After 4:30 PM. Pick up artwork (gallery hours) or mailed out to artists the following week.

This exhibit honors Peggy Doole (1934-2021), long-time resident of the metro D.C. area who avidly pursued the field of art history, sharing her love of art by giving lectures, sponsoring art exhibits, and leading tours at the inception of the Hirshhorn, in museums throughout Europe and the U.S. and finally for the school program at the National Gallery of Art for many years. Her post-graduate museum work led her to a focus on and special passion for printmaking that makes this honor a fitting tribute from her family.

Application Requirements

Work sample requirements:

-Artists must submit 1-3 images for consideration on CAFÉ submission platform.

•     resume/CV

•     brief biography(no more than 150 words)

•     brief artist statement

We plan to publish a catalog and include entry information. It may have to be edited because of size requirements. 

Work: 

•   Hand-pulled prints, screen prints, digital prints, fine art photographs, and three-dimensional work with print components.

•   Original, editioned, and archivally printed and framed. (We accept editions of one, that is, 1/1, of monoprints, etc.)

•  For two-dimensional work, image may be NO LARGER THAN 120 square inches, with framed size NO LARGER THAN 250 square inches. (H X W) Three-dimensional work may be no more than 600 cubic inches needing no frame. (H X L X W) 

•  All work must be visibly signed by artist (front or back) and include edition numbers and certificate of authenticity for hand-pulled prints and photographs. Works must be priced for sale, marked POR (price on request) or NFS. List framed price. When setting prices please note that WPG will retain a 40% commission on all sales.

• Please REVIEW SIZE LIMITATIONS: be sure the work you submit meets the size requirements. 

• Only one artwork from each applicant will be chosen for exhibit; that is, no entrant will have more than one piece selected and put on display. Accepted pieces are submitted only after the jurying process.

Delivery, Presentation, & Installation:

•  All work delivered to the gallery must have the following information affixed to the non-viewing side of artwork:  Artist Name, Address, phone number and email, Title of the work, medium and price. 

•  Work must arrive or be delivered on scheduled dates.

•  Measure to ensure work meets size limitations before delivery, include outer edges of frames. Work not in compliance will not be exhibited. No exceptions. 

•  Two-dimensional work must be suitably framed (clip frames not allowed) and under Plexiglass. Frames should be ready for hanging, using wires -- no saw-tooth hanging tabs.  Work that does not meet these standards will not be included in the exhibition and will be returned at the artist’s expense. 

•   Shipped work must be packed in a sturdy, re-usable box. No packing peanuts.  Instructions for repacking work should be included. All shipped work must include a pre-paid return shipping label. Work shipped without pre-paid return receipt and/or acceptable packing material will not be returned. 

•    All work will be handled with all possible care, but pieces submitted for exhibition are at the artist’s risk. In the event of damage or theft, Washington Printmakers Gallery will not be held liable. If insurance is desired, the artist must carry it.

Eligibility Criteria

This exhibition is open to artists 18 years of age or older residing in the United States of America with the following exception: Current members of the Washington Printmakers Gallery are not eligible to apply to this exhibit. A maximum of 3 original works created within the past 2 years may be entered.
