Call Description

The city of Los Altos Parks, Arts, Recreation, and Cultural (PARC) Commission invites artists to submit a proposal for the design and creation of a community mosaic installation on an existing cement bench located in downtown Los Altos on Main Street.

Project Overview:
The city is looking to select an artist or artists to design and install a durable outdoor mosaic overlay on an existing cement bench located in downtown Los Altos on Main Street. The mosaic should reflect an engaging and welcoming public space.

Project Goals:

  • Create a visual impact.
  • Use durable outdoor materials that demonstrate an understanding of maintenance and longevity with regards to working with a cement base.
  • Utilize a community engagement process which will allow the public to participate in the installation process.

Timeline:

  1. Submission Deadline: July 30, 2026
  2. Application Jury: August 18 - 30, 2026
  3. Selected Artist Notification: early September 2026
  4. Art Installation: Fall 2026

Application Requirements

  • Complete a written proposal that includes:
    • A clear vision for the proposed concept and design.
    • A detailed description of the community engagement process that would be utilized to allow the public to participate in the installation process.
    • An outline or overview of your experience with similar projects.
    • An outline of anticipated or expected maintenance of this project.
  • Artist biography
  • 2-3 samples of past work which can be submitted via images or link to a website.

Eligibility Criteria

The artist search is open to all artists within the local region of the state of California, but the PARC Commission is unable to reimburse for travel expenses.

Selection Criteria:

  • Artistic quality and visual impact of the proposed concept and design.
  • Effectiveness of the community engagement process that would be utilized to allow the public to participate in the installation process.
  • Experience and ability to complete the project based upon prior projects.
  • Understanding of durability and maintenance.
