Call Description

Introduction:
The Palo Alto Art Center invites artists working in all media to submit proposals for a new Artist in Residence Program, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.  This Artist in Residence Program will reinforce the mission of the Palo Alto Art Center, while building important connections between the Center’s critically recognized exhibition and studio program, as well as the larger community. During their residency, artists will collaborate with community members in a variety of Art Center programs and with a range of Art Center constituents culminating in a final exhibition at the Art Center.
Goals for the program are as follows:
·         To foster a facet of the Art Center’s exhibition program that is focused on new work, created by Bay Area artists with community engagement, specifically for the Art Center
·         To reinforce the Art Center’s mission through a program that integrates seeing and making art
·         To establish a programmatic connection between the Art Center’s exhibitions and its class programs for children and adults
·         To create more opportunities for collaboration between artists and Art Center staff, and between artists and the larger community
Scope of Work:
Each artist will participate in a three-month residency, with the resulting artwork(s) exhibited in the Art Center galleries following the residency.
During each artist’s residency, he or she will be required to do the following:
·         Work on-site developing artwork(s) during regularly scheduled periods, with studio space provided by PAAC (note that work does not have to be created exclusively at the Art Center).
·         Attend an Art Center staff meeting to assist with the development of programing related to the artwork(s) being created.
·         Present at least one participatory workshop for the general public to create content for the installation; the artist will determine the extent and kind of public involvement in concert with Art Center staff
·         Conduct an informal walkthrough of the exhibition for docents, staff and volunteers
·         Present a lecture to the general public during the exhibition period
·         Collaborate with Art Center staff to develop a program related to the artwork(s), such as a specialized workshop for Adult Studio participants, a workshop for Children’s Fine Art participants, or an activity at a Family Day event
Budget: Artist honoraria for each residency is $5,000 and inclusive of materials. Artwork created during the residency will be loaned to the Art Center for the exhibition period, then returned to the artist at the close of the exhibition.
