THE APPALACHIAN PASTEL SOCIETY NATIONAL EXHIBITION is a biennial event open to all pastel artists from all over the United States. This exhibition presents the best in the art of pastel painting in America, and has presented works by established artists as well as newcomers to the medium. The 2014 Juror is Stan Sperlak, a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America. Mr. Sperlak will do a demonstration open to the public on the day of the reception, October 4th, at the Bascom Center for the Visual Arts in Highlands, NC. Exhibition runs from October 4, 2014 through January 4, 2015.
The mission of the Appalachian Pastel Society is to promote an understanding and appreciation of soft pastel painting throughout Western North Carolina and the surrounding areas. The goal of APS is to elevate standards of excellence for the benefit of artists, collectors, and art lovers, by sponsoring exhibitions, speakers, classes and publicity.

JUROR
Stan Sperlak, a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, will select the works to be exhibited. Sperlak is also a Signature member of the Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, having served on the Board of Directors from 2005-2009. He is a member and past President of The Cape May County Art League, a Signature member of the Maryland Pastel Society and a member of Colorado Pastel society.
Sperlak was honored with a Mid-career solo show at the Noyes Museum of Art, Oceanville, NJ in May of 2012 of Nocturnes and Evening Paintings. This was his 25th Solo Show. His work is in the permanent collection of the Noyes Museum and The University of Scranton.
Mr. Sperlak will judge the accepted paintings in the gallery of the Bascom Center for the Visual Arts. On October 4th, 2014, he will present his dynamic style in a demonstration for the public, and then join the artists for the opening reception in the evening.
ELIGIBILITIY
Only paintings done in dry pastel may be submitted. 80% of the exposed surface of the painting must be dry pastel. No oil pastels will be accepted. Paintings must be entirely the work of the artist and cannot be copied from other artists or publications. Paintings done under supervision (such as in a workshop or a class) are not eligible. Paintings that have been exhibited in previous Appalachian Pastel Society National Exhibitions are not eligible.
Works copied or derived from published photos or photos without permission of the photographer are not eligible.  Painting size including the frame may not exceed 60 inches in either direction. Nudes will be accepted at the discretion of the judge.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION July 22, 2014 
All entries must be submitted by midnight, Mountain Time, July 22, 2014 on CaFE (www.callforentry.org).  First, go to callforentry.org and REGISTER a user account if you are new to café.  You can then add images to your Portfolio at any time prior to filling out applications to shows. Once you have opened the prospectus from the calendar or list, and begun filling it out and saving, you can find it again by clicking on My Cafe Entries. When you log in, that page will open automatically so you can resume your application any time.

ENTRY FEE
$35 for up to three images, $30 for APS members (Members apply coupon code, non-members leave blank)
Payment may be made by credit/debit card or check, by selecting the correct option on the CaFe application. Payments by check must be postmarked by the deadline, made out to the Appalachian Pastel Society and sent to Carol Rollick, 220 Chestnut Hill Dr., Franklin, NC 28734 .  All entry fees are non-refundable.

GALLERY SPECIFICATIONS
All artwork must be suitably framed for gallery presentation.  Paintings MUST BE WIRED AND READY TO HANG.  No clip frames or saw-tooth hangers. Mats should be white or off-white. Colored mats will be accepted for exhibition but will not be considered for awards. The size of the FRAMED painting may not exceed 60 inches in either direction. Any painting exceeding this size will be returned upon receipt at the artist's expense.
DELIVERY OF ACCEPTED ART WORKS
Ship paintings accepted by the juror, with a Pre-paid return label inside the box, to arrive between September 15-19, 2014, weekdays only, from 9 AM- 5 PM. Paintings should be shipped to

Please package your paintings carefully for shipping. We suggest a sturdy two-part box that is easy to open. We highly recommend using Airfloat Systems specialty boxes. www.airfloatsys.com  Wrap paintings carefully. Fill all voids. Make sure the painting cannot shift during transport. DO NOT use Styrofoam peanuts. We will not repack it with them. Pink foam board insulation and new bubble wrap work. Mark “TOP” and “FRONT” of box and write your name and “Appalachian Pastel Society” in large letters on the outside of the box.
HAND DELIVERED WORK
Monday, September 15th or Tuesday, September 16th from 10 AM – 3 PM. You may hand deliver paintings to the Bascom Center on these two days and times only.
Pick up - January 12th, and Tuesday, January 13th, 2015 from 10 AM- 3 PM .  If you are unable to make these times, please make other arrangements with someone to pick up your work and notify Jim Smythe with your permission. jimesmythe@mac.com  (828)507-4248
