FIBER FOCUS 2015
"Fiber Focus 2015" is a juried exhibit that features artworks in all media that focus on fiber as media as well as technique. Artists aged 21+ from 9 Midwestern regional states (Missouri and the 8 states contiguous to our border) are eligible to submit works for this juried exhibit. Open to artists in Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee. ONLY artists residing in these 9 Midwestern regional states are eligible for this exhibition.

This is the 20th anniversary presentation of our exhibit. The "Fiber Focus" exhibition is presented in conjunction with the citywide Innovations in Textiles X collaborative event.

HISTORY OF "FIBER FOCUS" EXHIBITION
Created in 1995, Art Saint Louis' "Fiber Focus" exhibition has a wonderful history. We have had the good fortune to exhibit works by hundreds of excellent Midwest regional artists and our esteemed previous jurors include outstanding key internationally-recognized figures working in contemporary fiber art, including:

THIS YEAR'S "FIBER FOCUS 2015" EXHIBITION JUROR
Artist Marci Rae McDade is Editor of Surface Design Journal (since 2012). She is also a mentor and instructor in the MFA Applied Craft + Design Program, cosponsored by the Oregon College of Art and Craft and the Pacific Northwest College of Art, in Portland, Oregon. Based in Portland, OR, McDade was previously Editor of Fiberarts magazine (March 2008-May 2011) until it ceased publication.
She received a MFA in fiber and material studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007), completed a Fiber Emerging Artist Residency at the Oregon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon (2007), and received a BA in film and video production from Columbia College Chicago (1994).
McDade has curated numerous contemporary art exhibitions including, most recently, "Fail-safe: Discomforts Close to Home" (2014), which debuted at Craft Alliance, St. Louis and traveled to Hap Gallery, Portland, Oregon. She also curated the well-received "Girl on Guy: the object of my desire" (2007) at A+D Gallery, Chicago, and "Perfect: a group exhibition" (2005-2007), which originated at the Chicago Cultural Center and traveled to several gallery and museum venues around the country. As a practicing fiber artist, McDade has exhibited her embroidered two-dimensional pieces and multi-media fiber installation work nationally in solo and group exhibitions.

EXHIBITION SPACE & DATES
Art Saint Louis Gallery in downtown St. Louis, MO. Exhibition dates: August 8-October 8, 2015. Free reception will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015, 6-9 p.m., during the Innovations in Textiles X weekend.

ABOUT ART SAINT LOUIS
Located on the ground floor of the historic and beautifully renovated Park Pacific building at 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, Art Saint Louis is home to one of the most popular and frequently visited exhibition spaces in the entire St. Louis region. Created in 2013 and built upon the organization’s 30+ year success in connecting St. Louis regional artists and audiences, the new 2,700 square foot space Gallery boasts a year-round series of professionally juried group exhibitions showcasing the best of the region’s contemporary visual art. Highlighting each exhibition, Art Saint Louis opening receptions are a cultural mainstay in downtown St. Louis and are followed throughout the run of each exhibit with extensive viewing hours Monday through Saturday and an average of over 500 visitors per week. Uniquely designed as a gallery/café hybrid, the space is also the one and only café home of St. Louis coffee roaster Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters, making it a cultural and social destination like no other in the St. Louis region.

ELIGIBILITY
Open to artists 21 years of age and older living in the following 9 Midwest regional states: Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee. Only artists residing in these 9 Midwestern regional states are eligible for this exhibition.

DEADLINE
The deadline to submit works for this exhibit is June 1, 2015 (11:59 MST).

SPECIFICATIONS
  • Limit 3 original artworks.
  • Contemporary artworks in any FIBER media or combination of fiber media will be considered. Other media may be incorporated, however, the central or key element explored must clearly be fiber or fiber technique. All styles, techniques, media. Video artwork must have key fiber element.
  • PLEASE BE SPECIFIC and list the media that you are using on the entry. Do not just write the term Fiber or Fiber Art. We need to know what your artwork is made of, what materials you are using.
  • Collaboratives are considered. Please list names of all artists who created artwork.
  • Proposals not considered.
  • If accepted, the artwork that you submit for jurying is the artwork that would be exhibited. NO artwork substitutions accepted.
  • Artwork must be completed between 2012—2015.
  • NO ceiling installed work.
  • NO works that sit directly on floor. Sculpture that otherwise would sit on floor must have platform provided by artist that elevates work min. 24” up off of floor.
  • All artwork must be display ready with display hardware included.
  • If work requires specific hanging device or armature, these apparatus must be included along with clear installation instructions. Anything complex or complicated, the artist is required to install.
  • Quilts and textiles must have accompanying hanging bars or similar installation apparatus  provided by artist for display/presentation of artwork.
  • Other 2-d artworks must be framed or, if not framed, pre-approved presentation (email info@artstlouis.org for questions). Gallery-wrapped canvas OK as long as artwork is textile based--outright paintings will not be accepted for this exhibition.
  • Wearables: artist must provide mannequin or appropriate dress form for display. Work will not be suspended.
  • Size limits: Final installation size not to exceed 6’ (72”) wide or 7’ (84”) high. 3-d, oversized or installation works must be installed and deinstalled by artist under direction of ASL Artistic Director.
  • 3-d works that are extremely fragile, very small, that have a very small bottom/base, are unstable or do not sit flat on a pedestal are discouraged.
  • NO works that are nailed, pinned, tacked, taped, velcroed, painted on, glued, adhered, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls.
  • No loose plexi that is clipped or nailed to wall.
  • Artist must provide all equipment necessary to present video or artwork requiring electricity, incl. cords, DVD player, monitor, etc.
  • Works not previously exhibited in any exhibit in Art Saint Louis Gallery.
  • Works not exhibited in any juried exhibit in St. Louis region during 6 months prior to exhibit dates.
AWARDS
All Awards will be selected by Juror Marci Rae McDade. We will offer a cash Best of Show Award and additional Awards of Excellence. We are proud to announce a $250 Award sponsored by the Weavers' Guild of St. Louis Award for Excellence in Woven Tapestry given in memory of Helen Wenzel. Missouri Fiber Artists will be sponsoring this exhibition and will present a $250 Merit Award for Creative/Innovative Use of Fiber.

JURYING
Judging is done by JPEGs online only at CallForEntry.org.
IMPORTANT: Video may not be submitted as mere documentation of work. Video may only be submitted as video artwork and must have key fiber media as content or element making the video an artwork.
  • LIMIT: 3 artworks. Limit 2 JPEGs per artwork: 1 full view is required and either 1 detail OR 1 alternate view is also accepted.

Please make sure that the digital images of your artworks are:
  • In focus.
  • Free of any watermarks or name imprint.
  • Free of a time-date stamp.

Upload options for image files:
  • File format: JPEG only.
  • File dimensions: No smaller than 1920 pixels on the longest size.
  • File resolution: 72 ppi/dpi (standard web resolution).
  • File size: 5MB maximum.
Upload options for video files:
  • File formats: 3GP, WMV, AVI, MOV, ASF, MPG, MP4, M2T, MKV, M2TS.
  • Resolution: minimum 620x480; max. 1920x1080.
  • Aspect ratio: 4:3 or 16:9.
  • Bit rate: recommended above 240 kbps.
  • Frame rate: minimum 12 fps, recommended 30 fps. The frame rate of the original video should be maintained without re-sampling. In particular, pulldown and other frame-rate re-sampling techniques are strongly discouraged.
  • Codec: h.264, h.263, mpeg-1, mpeg-2, mpeg-4, Windows Media Video, and motion jpeg mpeg-1 muxed, Apple Lossless
  • Container: 3gp, asf, avi, mov, mpeg, mpeg-2, mp4, ogg
  • Video file size: 100 MB maximum.
Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the juror. Artworks selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by JPEGs may be removed from exhibit at Artistic Director’s discretion.

SALES & INSURANCE
All artworks must either have a sale price or be marked Not for Sale (NFS). No works marked POR (price on request) will be accepted. Sale prices listed on entry submitted for jurying may not be changed if work is selected for exhibit. All sales are through Art Saint Louis with 30% donation/commission on work sold to ASL and 70% to artist. Artist determines sale price on artwork & must include Art Saint Louis' 30% commission. Artist responsible for delivery of sold work to buyer at end of exhibit. Artworks are insured at 50% of retail value during exhibit. Artist responsible for work in transit to/from ASL.

FRAMING & PRESENTATION
  • All work selected for exhibit must be delivered to Gallery display ready with display hardware included.
  • If work requires specific hanging device or armature, these must be included with clear installation instructions.
  • Quilts and textiles must have accompanying hanging bars or similar installation apparatus  provided by artist for display/presentation of artwork.
  • Other 2-d artworks must be framed or, if not framed, pre-approved presentation (email info@artstlouis.org for questions). Gallery-wrapped canvas OK as long as artwork is textile based--outright paintings will not be accepted for this exhibition.
  • Wearables: artist must provide mannequin or appropriate dress form for display. Work will not be suspended.
  • NO saw tooth hangers, clip-style frames or keyhole mounts (often found on photos on metal).
  • French Cleat mounts ok (notify in advance of delivery).
  • Other approved methods of final presentation include: gallery-wrapped and strip-framed as an alternative to framing.
  • NO works that are nailed, pinned, tacked, taped, velcroed, painted on, glued, adhered, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls.
  • 2-d works must be framed or, if not framed, pre-approved presentation.
  • No loose plexi that is clipped or nailed to wall.
  • Oversized, heavy, or installation work must be installed by artist under direction of Artistic Director.
  • Video must be presented on min. 9” monitor; monitor weight not to exceed 20 lbs.
  • Artworks requiring electricity: Artist must provide all cords, cord protectors & equipment required to present work.
  • Specific installation requirements must be resolved in advance with directions and any devices provided by artist.
  • If artwork is complicated to install, artist is required to install and deinstall own work under direction of ASL Artistic Director.
  • Art Saint Louis reserves the right to install accepted works in a manner deemed necessary for a well-designed exhibition or for security purposes.

PUBLICITY
Art Saint Louis reserves the right to photograph all exhibited works for web use and publicity purposes. Art Saint Louis reserves the right to use digital images submitted for jurying for publicity of exhibition including but not limited to email, web use and social media.

Area nonprofit arts organizations, galleries & museums and for-profit commercial galleries join forces to present exhibitions related to fiber art created by regional, national and international artists. Activities include workshops, lectures, gallery tours and community programs. Innovations in Textiles X serves to enlighten the community with a unique aesthetic perspective on fiber art featuring various materials and techniques. The broad range of programming mirrors the symposium’s dedication to the investigation of innovative ideas. Keynote speaker and special events to be announced—stay tuned!

DELIVERY & PICK-UP
  • Artworks juried into "Fiber Focus 2015" exhibit are to be hand-delivered to Art Saint Louis on July 24-25, 2015, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and picked-up at the end of the show, October 9-10, 2015, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Shipped artworks accepted July 20-24, 2015, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Exhibited works may not be removed from Art Saint Louis Gallery & "Fiber Focus 2015" exhibition prior to 9 a.m. October 9.
  • ALL works must be removed from Gallery by 4 p.m. October 10 (if picking-up in-person).
  • Artists are responsible for all shipping costs to/from exhibition. No C.O.D. shipments. Pre-paid return shipping required (form enclosed with shipped artwork or arrangements made by artist in advance). We will pack your artworks back up in the boxes in which you shipped them to us but we will not handle any shipping arrangements--that is the artist's responsibility. Return of shipped work with pick-up by shipper from ASL: October 12-16, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
LEGAL
Having submitted artworks for jurying & having paid the entry fee, artist accepts all conditions listed in the aforementioned rules of entry/exhibit prospectus. This is legal & binding. Accepted artworks may not be substituted and prices may not be changed.
