Stuart Artist-in-Residence
Department of Visual Arts
South Dakota State University
Brookings, South Dakota
Residency Term: September 21, 2015-October 16, 2015
Honorarium: $2,000
Application deadline: April 10th, 2015
Residency Goals: Applications are now being accepted from artists working in any discipline who are interested in communicating their conceptualization process, through visual documentation, during a one-month residency within an academic environment. Given the selection committee is specifically interested in reviewing project proposals from artists who are willing to share how they initiate and develop personal ideas, and is less interested in the production of art through processes involving media and craft, the residency project does not necessarily need to include the completion of artwork in permanent media. During the residency, it is essential that the selected artist be able to communicate his/her project progression with visual arts students and faculty through open studio hours.
Given South Dakota State University’s commitment to “extend the reach and depth of the University by developing strategic programs and collaborations”, the residency selection committee especially encourages applications from artists who are currently residing and working outside and beyond the South Dakota region.
Residency Requirements: The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule that includes 4-6 hours of open studio time per week to share the development of his/her project with students, faculty and the greater university community. The artist will also be required to give a public visual presentation of his/her artwork inside the South Dakota Museum of Art Auditorium, and present visual progress of residency project through exhibition at the end of the residency term.
Residency Provides: The artist will be provided 24/7 access to a 660 sq. ft. lockable studio space. Basic studio furniture will be provided. The Visual Arts Department may be able to provide access to specific equipment and facilities. Artists should communicate specific needs within their project proposal. The artist will reside within a four-bedroom, university owned guesthouse that includes a private lockable bedroom along with full access to kitchen, living, laundry and parking facilities.
Artist Responsibilities: All transportation, materials, supplies, meals and personal expenses are the responsibility of the artist.
Application Process: Submit application through www.callforentry.org
Include: statement of residency project intent, professional resume not exceeding three pages, list of three professional references, 10-20 images of completed artwork and/or images relevant to statement of project intent and an image description list. For audio and/or video, please provide web-link information within resume.
