HUB-BUB is partnering with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries to host an artist-in-residence for the length of 11 months. The artist’s time will be divided between their own artistic projects and a generous amount of community work with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries.

The library itself provides a safe public space for engaging a wide demographic of the Spartanburg community. The community work can span everything from classes, workshops, curation, art projects featuring members of the community, etc. The requirements are flexible to allow for creative freedom and because all work will be guided and supported by a Projects Committee made up of employees of the two host organizations.
HUB-BUB - Residency Organizer
HUB-BUB’s mission is “to build community through dynamic arts, ideas, and activities.” We were founded over 10 years ago to bring new cultural opportunities to the residents of Spartanburg and provide opportunities for artists, near and far. We also use the guiding principle “reimagine place” to envision work that redefines public spaces, creates meaningful connections between the city’s residents, and hopefully leads to a better Spartanburg for all.
SPARTANBURG COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARIES - Residency Host
The Spartanburg County Public Libraries’ mission is “Create. Connect. Change.” This ambitious mission is guided by the vision to create “a culture of lifelong learning by connecting people, ideas, and information resulting in a community pursuing positive change. The Library is deeply embedded in the community and provides opportunities for Spartanburg residents young and old.
ELIGIBILITY
The residency is open to artists in any discipline willing to work in the Spartanburg community for the length of 11 months. Work in public and/or community arts is beneficial, but not necessary. However artists are expected to show experience working collaboratively.
When reviewing applications we will give equal consideration to both artistic merit and demonstration of abilities to work with groups, other artists, organizations, and communities. Self-discipline, motivation, and the ability to manage a project from beginning to end, working in various capacities throughout its realization will be extremely important for this residency. The artist will be provided with a strong support staff from both the Spartanburg County Public Libraries and HUB-BUB, but is expected to take the lead in the inception, organization, and implementation of devised programming and activities.
COMMUNITY WORK EXPECTATIONS
The resident will be expected to dedicate 20 hours a week to their community work. During the first weeks of the residency this may be as simple as attending community events and meeting leaders from various sectors in Spartanburg.

The artist’s particular involvement in the community is his or her choice. The artist is welcome to create projects for various groups within the larger community or focus on a particular group for the majority of his or her work. The Projects Committee will provide assist in determining the best practice in regards to the targeted community/ies.
RESIDENCY LOCATION
The artist will be able to use facilities through both HUB-BUB and the Libraries. The Library Headquarters location in downtown Spartanburg will provide excellent space for a variety of community projects. It is expected that the majority of the 20 hours a week of community work will be spent at this or another library location. The specific use of this time will largely be determined by the specific artist in conversation with both HUB-BUB and the Libraries. It could range from time spent working in a public studio space, teaching workshops, creating or curating exhibits, facilitating interactive displays or events, etc. The artist will have access to a wide range of facilities at the library headquarters, including several classrooms, meeting rooms, gallery space, A/V equipment
TIMELINE
Due to the length of the residency and the expectation of strong community connection, artists are not expected to begin the residency with specific projects in mind. We expect the artist to begin with an open mind and spend the first one month embedding themselves in Spartanburg.

Throughout the duration of the residency, the artist will have weekly meetings with a Projects Committee made up of employees of both HUB-BUB and the Spartanburg County Public Libraries. Initially this committee will serve as the primary liaisons for introducing the resident to various sections of the community. After a period of no longer than 6 weeks after the beginning of the residency the artist will be expected to begin their community work. As the artist moves into the actual facilitation of community work, the Projects Committee will serve as a consulting body and support staff and assist in planning, budgeting, and execution of the projects, including finding additional partners if a project demands support from specific artistic, business, or civic sectors.
BUDGET
The artist’s living expenses will be covered, including an apartment, all utilities, and a monthly stipend of $750.

In addition, the artist will receive financial support to develop projects and acquire materials. These funds are to be used in support of community work for the duration of the residency. This money remains with HUB-BUB and its use must be approved by the residency Projects Committee. If the resident wishes to propose a project that exceeds the allotted funds the proposal must be approved by the Projects Committee before engaging in any additional fundraising.
SELECTION PROCESS
Members of the HUB-BUB staff, Spartanburg County Public Libraries staff, and community and arts leaders of Spartanburg will form the selection board to review the applications.
