Call for Photographers


ELIGIBILITY |

Entries must be by photographers based in the Midwestern United States. For purposes of this exhibition, the Midwest is defined as including the states of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. All photographic imagery is eligible for submission. This includes traditional film, alternative process, digital, and all post-production techniques. Entries should not have been shown at previous PhotoMidwest biennial festivals.

Submission deadline: June 17, 2016

Exhibit venue and dates: The Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, Wisconsin, September 9 through December 5, 2016.

Acceptance Notice: Everyone who submits will receive an email notification of which images were accepted. Accepted images will be posted on the Center’s website along with instructions for preparing images for gallery presentation.


JUROR | Larry Fink

Larry Fink has been a professional photographer for over four decades. He has had solo exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Musee de la Lausanne Photographie in Belgium, and the Musee de l’Elysee in Switzerland. He shows in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the College for Creative Studies at the College of Art and Design in Detroit (2002); in addition he received two John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships (1976 and 1979), and two Individual Photography Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, (1978 and 1986).

His commercial work includes advertising campaigns for Smirnoff, Bacardi, and Cunard Lines (Q.E.2). His work has appeared in top publications including Vanity Fair, W, GQ, Detour, The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker. He has been teaching for over 40 years, most recently as a professor of photography at Bard College.


SELECTION | AWARDS AND OBLIGATIONS

Juror’s Selection: At the PhotoMidwest Invitational reception, Larry Fink will select the three top images. Cash awards will be $500 for Best in Show, $250 for First Runner Up, and $100 for Second Runner Up.

Honorable Mention Awards: Three images receiving honorable mention recognition will be awarded a PhotoMidwest membership, including the PhotoMidwest weekly newsletter, access to PhotoMidwest interest groups and member shows, and discounted admission to ticketed PhotoMidwest Festival events.


SUBMISSION | Entry Fee


Entry fees: $45 for the first three images. PhotoMidwest members receive a $10 discount. Applicants signing up for membership at the time they submit will receive the coupon code from PhotoMidwest for use at checkout on the CAFÉ website.

Additional Images: Up to two additional images may be submitted for $15 each.

SPONSOR | PhotoMidwest 

PhotoMidwest (formerly the Center for Photography at Madison) is sponsoring the PhotoMidwest 2016 Juried Exhibition as part of the 2016 PhotoMidwest Festival. PhotoMidwest was created in 1998 to promote the photographic arts in Wisconsin. The Madison-based arts non-profit offers monthly interest group meetings and photo critiques, exhibitions, and regional and national guest speakers. PhotoMidwest also has an extensive offering of classes in photography and the photographic arts.

The 2016 PhotoMidwest Festival is the 8th biennial PhotoMidwest event. This year, the Festival offers an intensive three-day kickoff to Festival following the opening reception for the PhotoMidwest Invitational exhibit. Lectures by noted regional and national speakers, workshops, guided photo shoots, classes, and other special events are all part of the six-week festival..
