Concept

The concept for the Best of the West show is to draw attention to the creative strength of Western Maryland artists. This collaborative effort of the Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett county arts councils will pull together a traveling exhibition featuring examples of the creative work being done in their respective counties. The focus of the first Best of the West show will be three-dimensional artwork.

 Venues

The first venue for the show will be the Allegany Arts Council's Saville Gallery in Cumberland. The show will open October 14 and run through Nov. 12.

The second venue for the show will be in Frederick at a yet to be determined location and yet to be determined dates. We do expect, however, that the show will take place before the end of the holiday season.

Other venues are yet to be determined.

The possibility of having this show appear as a pop-up in Baltimore, Annapolis or Washington DC is being explored.

Criteria

Three-dimensional art is any artwork which, in its final form, is not flat. Given this definition, ceramics, woodworking, metal work, furniture, glasswork, 3D printing, fiber art, found-object sculpture, multidimensional photographic and installation art would all qualify. Printmaking, painting, and other forms of typically two-dimensional art which manipulated to be displayed in three-dimensions would also qualify. Framed or unframed two-dimensional art which hangs on a wall would not qualify.

Who qualifies as a Western Maryland artist?

For the purposes of this exhibition, any artist who resides at least part of the year or has a studio in Frederick, Washington, Allegany, or Garrett counties qualifies.

Selection

15 pieces from each county representing the best 3D art entered through its call will be selected by a committee organized by the participating Arts Councils. An individual artist can be represented by up to 5 pieces. So the invited artists from a county could include as many as 15 artists or as few as three.

Drop-off

All artwork will be dropped off at the first venue (Saville Gallery) on Tuesday, October 11. The address is 9 N. Centre St., Cumberland. (Alternate drop-off date may be arranged as necessary.)

 Transport

All artwork will be packed and transported from Cumberland to Frederick by professional art handlers.

If other venues emerge, new arrangements will be made for transport

Artists will be responsible for picking up their artwork from the last venue or will have arranged for it to be shipped with packing materials and prepaid shipping.

Insurance

Insurance for the artwork is the responsibility of each venue. Allegany Arts Council and Frederick Arts Council will be responsible for insuring the artwork during transport.
