The Providence Art Club invites female artists to submit their strongest two and three-dimensional work in any media to the Providence Art Club National Open Juried Exhibition Making Your Mark. This exhibition is the concluding event in a three-month long series celebrating the Art Club’s unique founding as the first such organization to be co-founded by men and women. In 1880 six women and ten men signed the founding documents of the Providence Art Club. One hundred and thirty six years later the Club proudly continues its mission to promote “art culture”. Annually, the Club hosts an open juried show to provide non-members with an opportunity to exhibit in our Maxwell Mays Gallery, which hosted its first Art Club exhibition in 1885. Making Your Mark will celebrate the achievements of contemporary female artists, thus honoring the women so integral to the founding of this unique organization. Please visit www.callforentry.org to apply to this exhibition.

Awards: Thirteen (13) prizes totaling over $5,000 in awards. Best in Show prize of $1,500.

Eligibility: Open to artists who identify as female working in the United States.

Exhibition Juror:
Kathryn Wat, Chief Curator, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC

Kathryn Wat is chief curator at the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) in Washington, D.C. She previously served as the museum’s curator of modern and contemporary art. At NMWA, Wat oversees exhibition programming and the museum’s 5,000-object collection, both of which feature art made by women worldwide from the sixteenth century to the present. She develops exhibitions from the museum’s collection that are presented in NMWA’s landmark 1908 building in downtown Washington and that also travel to other venues. Her contemporary photography project Terrains of the Body will be on view at Whitechapel Gallery in London in spring 2017.
Wat also curates large-scale loan exhibitions, including Radical Love: Sister Mary Corita; Total Art: Contemporary Video; and Picturing Mary: Woman, Mother, Idea, the latter organized with the director of Museo dell’Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. She is currently completing work on Revival, an exhibition exploring the nature of spectacle in contemporary sculpture and photo-based art (opening June 2017). In her previous position as curator at the Akron Art Museum, Wat developed American Impressions: An Arcadian Vision, an exhibition of nineteenth-century landscape paintings that circulated to seven venues across the U.S.

To expand NMWA’s global focus, Wat partners with international embassies to present projects drawn from overseas museums and archives, including A World Apart: Anna Ancher and the Skagen Art Colony, an exhibition organized with Skagens Museum and the Embassy of Denmark. Wat regularly serves as a juror and guest curator for projects at other arts institutions in the greater Washington area, and she has been a member of several public art committees. She is manager of the New York Avenue Sculpture Project, a public art partnership between NMWA and Washington D.C.’s Office of Planning. Wat received her M.A. in art history from Case Western Reserve University and her Ph.D. in American art from the University of Delaware.
