Photography Now is CPW’s annual call for entries with exhibition and purchase prize.

ELIGIBILITY
CPW’s annual Photography Now exhibition celebrates the plurality of photography. From traditional to digital, all photographic techniques and approaches are welcome. Straight photography, fine art, narrative, documentary, landscape, social issues, still life, mixed media incorporating photography, photographic installations, and digital imaging and collage – are all eligible!

This year CPW has invited WILLIAM EWING to select the winning entries!

Additionally one photographer will be selected for the Directors’ Purchase Prize in which a print is purchased for CPW‘s Permanent Print Collection!

JUROR
From 1977 to 1984 William Ewing was Director of Exhibitions at the International Center of Photography, New York, and from 1996 to 2010 Director of the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, while also teaching at the University of Geneva. He has served on many juries over the years, and shown at a number of international photography festivals, as well as co-curating the New York Photo Festival in 2009.  Since 2010 he has worked as a curator for the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Minneapolis and Lausanne, and since 2015, for the Foundation Carène, Switzerland. He is also currently Director of Curatorial Projects for Thames & Hudson, London. 

Since the late 1970s Ewing’s exhibitions have been shown at many major museums in America and Europe, including: the Museum of Modern Art and ICP, New York; the Jeu de Paume and the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Hayward, Barbican and Serpentine Galleries, London; the Kunsthaus Zürich; the Folkwang Museum, Essen; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Ewing’s books include monographs on George Hoyningen-Huene, Erwin Blumenfeld, Dan Weiner, Ray Metzker, Leonard Freed and Arnold Newman, while his thematic books include Out of Focus, for the Saatchi Gallery, Lasting Impressions for Steidl, Flora Photographica, The Body, The Face: The New Photographic Portraiture; The Century of the Body, Landmark: The Fields of Landscape Photography, all for Thames & Hudson. His most recent book is Edward Burtynsky: Essential Elements, while William Wegman: Being Human will be published in 2017. 

In 2010 Ewing was awarded the status of Officer in the French Order of Arts and Letters, and in 2016 won the Outstanding Service to Photography Award from the Royal Photographic Society. He lives and works in Lausanne and London.

EXHIBITION
Selected artists will have their work exhibited in CPW’s gallery in late fall of 2017.

PURCHASE PRIZE
One print by a photographer from the exhibition will be chosen and purchased for CPW’s Permanent Print Collection, held at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz, and CPW. CPW’s Collection holds over 1,750 works of art by such program artists as Larry Fink, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Robert Heinecken, David Maisel, Mary Ellen Mark, Lilo Raymond, Steven Shore, Xaviera Simmons, and many more!

Past Purchase Prize recipients include Carlos Saavedra, Morgan Ashcom, Lucas Foglia, Thomas Jackson, Ilona Szwarc, among others.

TIMELINE
Results will be announced in late April or early May. Selected participants will be given instructions on how, when, and what to send for the exhibition.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • 10 images for $50, or 20 images for $75 (uploaded to CAFE specifications)*
  • Bio (up to 1,000 characters)
  • Artist Statement (up to 3,000 characters)
  • Appropriate entry fee

*All applicants must register for a free account on callforentry.org. Image upload instructions are available on the Media Prep tab on the home page, or simply click hereExhibition print sizes will not determine eligibility, however will be considered when selecting the number of framed pieces that will be included in the exhibition.

ENTRY FEES:

$50 for 10 images

$75 for 20 images: Includes a one year CPW membership or a one year renewal for current members.

FULL TIME STUDENTS and SENIORS: There is a $20 discount available for any entry level, with required upload of current ID. There is an upload window for student and senior ID's within the application itself. Please upload your ID there, then apply coupon code STUSEN17 at checkout to receive the discount. If ID provided is not current, your entry will be disqualified and you will not be refunded. Additionally, if you neglect to apply the coupon code at checkout, you will not be refunded later for the discount.

For Students: Upload a clear, sharp scan or cell phone photo of the front and back of your current validated student ID confirming full-time enrollment (dates must be visible). If ID is not dated,  send a copy of unofficial transcripts along with the front and back of student ID.

For Seniors: (Individuals 65 years or older) Please upload a clear, sharp scan or cell phone photo of any government issued I.D. that shows your birth date.
