Small Works: SDA at 40 is an exhibition of works by members of the Surface Design Association in conjunction with Surface Design Association’s 2017 40th Anniversary Biennial Conference Making Our Mark: SDA at 40, August 3-6, 2017 - Portland, OR

Submission Guidelines: 
SDA members are invited to submit their work for Small Works: SDA at 40 Exhibition as part of the Surface Design Association’s Making Our Mark: SDA at 40 40th Anniversary Conference, August 3-6, 2017 in Portland, Oregon.  This member exhibition will showcase innovative use in textiles. This is an open, non-juried call for exhibition. All submitted works meeting the guidelines will be accepted.

Deadline for submission is June 23, 2017.

Eligibility:
The exhibition is open to all Surface Design Association members 18 years of age or older. (If you are not currently a member of the Surface Design Association, you can join at www.surfacedesign.org.) Each entry must be original work completed after June 2015 and must be constructed, printed, dyed or otherwise embellished using any textile technique or process. The work must be mounted on a stretched canvas and ready to hang, as described below. This is an open, non-juried call for exhibition. All submitted works meeting the guidelines will be accepted.

Entry Process:
Registration must be completed online through CaFÉ (www.callforentry.org). A $30 submission fee will be charged online with your registration information.

Exhibition Requirements:
Participants are invited to submit ONE piece meeting the requirements list below. Only entries meeting the stated requirements will be displayed in the exhibition.

Submitted entries must:

  • Measure 12 inches square as the finished outside dimensions
  • Be mounted on a stretched canvas measuring 12 inches by 12 inches by 1.5 inches deep
  • Be prepared for hanging with eyehooks and wire across the back
  • Include a label on the back with the name of the artist, contact information, and the title of the piece

Awards:
The Juror for the 2017 Members’ Show is Marci Rae McDade. Awards will be determined from examination of actual pieces onsite. The judge will present awards based on visual interest, craftsmanship and innovation.

Third Place  $100

Award winners will be announced at the conference and will be listed on the SDA website and digital publications.

Award Judge:
Marci Rae McDade is the editor of Surface Design Journal and former editor of FiberArts magazine. She received an MFA in fiber and material studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in film and video production from Columbia College Chicago. As a practicing fiber artist and independent curator, McDade has exhibited her own work nationally in solo and group shows and curated numerous contemporary art exhibitions over the past decade. She is currently an instructor and mentor in the Applied Craft & Design MFA program (co-sponsored by Oregon College of Art and Craft and Pacific Northwest College of Art) in her hometown of Portland, Oregon.

Artist’s Agreement:
Submitting an entry to the SDA Members’ Show implies agreement on the part of the artist to all listed conditions. Conditions include permission to photograph work for publicity, catalog, and website. Any piece that is not of the quality reflected in the images or is too delicate to handle will not be included in the show. Any piece that, during installation, is found to be substantially different from the submission, or does not meet the size and mounting requirements, will not be exhibited.

Preparation for Submission:
Please have the following ready before starting the online submission process:

  • Digital image of your artwork
    • A high-resolution digital file meeting the dimensional requirements listed on the CaFÉ (www.callforentry.org) site. 
  • Submit file in .jpg format.  See instructions on CaFÉ at www.callforentry.org.
  • Information about the piece: title of the piece, materials and techniques used, sale price, and insurance value. 
  • The image does not need to show the stretched canvas frame needed for the exhibition. 
  • Your information: 
    • Contact information, including e-mail address and telephone(s) numbers.
    • Credit card to pay the $30 online submission fee.

If you are not an SDA member, you will need to join before submitting your entry.

After completing the online registration form, print the registration confirmation. Include a copy of the registration confirmation when you ship your artwork.

Online Submission:
Online submission must be completed by June 15, 2017. Digital submissions are required through CaFÉ (https://goo.gl/A3cG3T). Complete instructions on preparing your submission are available on the CaFÉ website, including a video tutorial of the process.

The steps for submitting your entry:

  1. Register at www.callforentry.org 
  2. Log in
  3. Upload an image of the piece you are submitting for the Members’ Show to the page called "My Portfolio." For help with preparing your images, go to the CaFÉ website (www.callforentry.org) and select the Media Prep tab
  4. Apply to the call titled: SDA Members’ Small Works Exhibit
  5. Select the image for this event and complete all required information. 
  6. Save Application. Make corrections, if needed 
  7. Proceed to Checkout
  8. Submit payment for confirmation.

Shipping the Work:
Each artist is responsible for shipping and insurance costs to and from the exhibition site, as well as insurance while the piece is in storage during check-in and awaiting installation. Include a printed copy of the Online Registration Confirmation in your package. All work must be shipped via UPS, USPS or FedEx in a sturdy, reusable box. Include a return shipping label and prepaid return shipping. Details for shipping will be included with confirmation. 

Work must be shipped to arrive no earlier than July 5, 2017 and no later than the July 14, 2017  in order to be included in the exhibition. Include a photograph of your piece for inventory purposes.

Pieces that do not meet the requirements cannot be considered for display.
