INFORMATION FOR ART INCLUSION AT THE ROWAN UNIVERSITY
BANK BUILDING ADDITION IN CAMDEN - 2017
This project is open to artists in the Delaware Valley region.

Background
Rowan University has evolved from its beginning in 1923 as a school with a mission to train teachers for South Jersey classrooms, to a comprehensive public research university with a strong regional presence and reputation. At Rowan, what underlies and drives every decision are four guiding principles that reflect what we value and how we perceive our obligation to serve and lead as a state university. Educational priorities, enrollment, outreach initiatives, finances and collaboration with partners are just a few of the concerns that benefit from the filter of the four pillars:

• Improving Affordability to help relieve the burden of student debt and maintain the highest
standards of fiscal accountability

Today, Rowan's 14,000 students may select from 59 bachelor’s, 56 master’s and four doctoral degree programs in colleges and schools across five campuses. The University is one of only 56 institutions in the country with accredited programs in business, education, engineering and medicine. From the modest normal school begun 90 years ago, Rowan University has become an extraordinary comprehensive institution that has improved the quality of life for the citizens of New Jersey and the surrounding states. In addition to its main campus in Glassboro, New Jersey, the university has a campus in Camden, which is also home to Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. The Stratford campus is home to the School of Osteopathic Medicine. Over the past several years, Rowan University has been increasing its presence in Camden and has become an integral part of the revitalization of its downtown. Its presence includes the renovation of and addition to a historic bank building.

The Bank Building
The First Camden National Bank & Trust building is located at 606 Cooper Street and encompasses the full width of the block from Sixth Street to North Broadway. The addition to the bank building is the subject of this call for entries. Renderings of the building and addition are shown on the host website.
The building was constructed in 1928 and was originally four stories high. There have been two subsequent additions. The first was the addition of a fifth floor sometime in the 1930’s or 1940’s. This second addition is evident by the setback of the exterior wall from the original four stories. An annex was added along the Sixth Street side of the building in 1953 for drive-through teller windows. The annex included a second and third floor to accommodate office space. In 1999 the Bank drive-through was removed and the ground floor was enclosed and renovated to be retail space. The bank is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places under the Banks, Insurance and Legal Buildings in Camden MPS designation. The historic five-story portion of the bank building consists of concrete and masonry columns, bearing walls and steel encased in concrete beams supporting concrete floor plates and roof decks. The exterior masonry/concrete walls support granite and limestone panels. The bank building, annex and addition as shown on the host website, accommodate the increase of Rowan’s offerings in Camden, including additional classroom space.

Art Inclusion
Art installations, as part of the State of New Jersey Public Buildings Arts Inclusion Act, are being proposed for the portion on the eastern facing side of the building as indicated on the host website. Proposed artwork should be dimensional in form and not be constructed of materials applied directly to the surface of the building.
 
Rowan University is a growing academic and economic presence in the City of Camden. It strives to become a good neighbor and member of the Camden community. The artwork should reflect and respond to this relationship and demonstrate sensitivity and respect for the historical and cultural past of the city, while looking forward to its future. The artwork should also complement the neoclassical style of the building while considering the University’s academic presence, and how it resonates with Camden’s cultural narrative. 

Artwork can be of any material, but will have to be applied to the exterior wall (as shown in Attachment A on host website) by adhesives or other material that will not compromise the structural integrity of the building or cladding. A section of the wall is shown in Attachment B. on the host website. Bolts or standout hardware cannot be used. As part of proposal development shortlisted artists will be required to meet with members of the Rowan community prior to presenting their concept, in order to gain insight and inform their proposal.
The budget for this project is $140,000.
