PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Using Margate as the inspiration, artists are asked to create a work of art that showcases Margate’s assets. Whether it be the City’s miles of waterways, green spaces, or people, Margate has a vast array of inspiration for artists. Submitted ideas must have a Margate inspired element. Photography will not be accepted.

CITY BACKGROUND: Margate is located in Northwestern Broward County and was once considered the “gateway to west Broward County”. Margate was incorporated as a city in 1955 due to a large influx of people moving to the area, and has grown steadily to about 57,000 residents.

ARTWORK SPECIFICS: Submitted artwork must be able to cover the template area (limited white space) and be clearly visible from a distance. Utility boxes vary in size; the design must be able to be scaled to different size boxes. Once artists are selected, boxes will be assigned and exact dimensions will be provided. See template attachment for general shape of utility boxes. Artwork will be digitally scanned and printed to adhesive film that will be adhered to the utility box. The boxes belong to Broward County and the Florida Department of Transportation and they have specific restrictions on design. Designs that promote or encourage the use of the following shall be prohibited:

Tobacco: Designs associated with or which may be associated with cigars, cigarettes, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, and other tobacco products.

Alcohol: Designs associated with or which may be associated with alcoholic beverages including, but not limited to, beer, wine, and distilled spirits. When a special event permit has been obtained that permits the sale of beer, wine or liquor, signage to identify the vendor(s) location(s) and product(s) is permitted.

Demeaning or disparaging words: Designs containing words that demean or disparage an individual or group of individuals on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, gender, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, age, disability, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Profanity: Designs containing profane language.

Firearms: Designs containing an image or depiction of a firearm.

Violence: Designs containing an image or description of graphic violence or the depiction of weapons or other implements or devices associated with an act(s) of violence or harm to a person or animal.

Unlawful goods or services: Designs which promote or encourage, or appear to promote or encourage, unlawful or illegal goods or services.

Unlawful conduct: Designs which promote or encourage, or appear to promote or encourage, unlawful or illegal behavior or activities.

Obscenity, nudity, human reproduction/sexuality products and services: Designs which contain obscene material or imply or appear to imply, or promote or appear to promote nudity. For purposes of these guidelines, the terms “obscene” and “nudity” shall have the meanings as contained in Florida Statutes, as may be amended from time to time. In addition, designs associated with or which may be associated with products or services related to human reproduction, sexuality, or sexual stimulation.

Endorsement: Designs which imply or declare an endorsement by a City or County agency, or the CRA without the prior written authorization of the CRA. No logos may be used.

“Adult”-oriented goods or services: Designs which promote or encourage, or appear to promote or encourage, adult book stores, nude dance clubs, and other adult entertainment establishments, adult telephone services, adult Internet sites, and escort services.

Potential danger: Designs which contain the word “stop,” “drive,” “danger” or any other word, phrase, symbol, lighting, or any devices or any components thereof, or character likely to interfere with or mislead pedestrian or vehicular traffic.

ARTIST REQUIREMENTS: Eligible artists must reside in the tri-county area of Broward, Palm Beach or Miami-Dade Counties. Preference will be given to artists who are Margate residents. The project is open to any professional visual artist with experience implementing their ideas and work in the public realm. The term “Artist” or “Professional Artist” means a practitioner in the visual arts, generally recognized by critics and peers as a professional of serious intent and ability.

ARTIST FEE: Not to exceed $300 per art piece, with a maximum of three art pieces submitted per artist.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Only complete application packages will be considered. A complete application package will include:

  1. Completed application
  2. Artist's resume
  3. Minimum of 5 and maximum of 10 digital images of samples of the artist's previous work
  4. Detailed sketch of idea(s) for project piece(s), the sketch of ideas for the project is not intended to be a final submission, but a preliminary sketch of ideas that reflect the direction of the piece. If commissioned, completed art pieces are subject to final approval by MCRA and City staff.

SELECTION PROCESS: MCRA and City of Margate staff shall consider the following when selecting artists for this project: alignment of the artwork to the goals of the City and MCRA; appropriateness of the artwork to the location; experience and qualifications of the artist; quality of the artwork; and how well the artwork represents the Project Description contained herein.  The MCRA decision on an artist or design shall be final.
