The State of Clay is a juried show open to original, innovative ceramic work by current and former residents of Massachusetts. The aim of the show is to broaden public awareness of contemporary ceramic art and to provide a venue for Massachusetts’ clay artists.

The show is hosted by the Ceramic Guild of the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society in Lexington, MA. Juror Emily Zilber will select awards in person and present a talk at the Artist Reception. Past shows online at www.stateofclay.com

Zilber is the Boston Museum of Fine Arts first Ronald L. and Anita C. Wornick Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts. Since 2010, Zilber has been responsible for the MFA’s vibrant program of contemporary decorative arts, including guiding acquisitions and developing a presence for craft and design in the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art.

Prior to joining the MFA, Zilber was Assistant Curator at Cranbrook Art Museum at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  She has edited and written for numerous publications and speaks internationally on topics related to 20th and 21st-century decorative arts, craft, and design.  She is a founding member of the Boston-based consortium The Commonwealth of Craft and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts.

ELIGIBILITY

 
The State of Clay is open to artists over age 18 who are current or former residents of Massachusetts or who are presently working with clay in Massachusetts.
Work must have been completed within the last three years, 2015 thru 2017.
Work must not have been previously displayed in a State of Clay exhibit.
Ceramic must be the dominant material.
 
EXHIBITION FAQS

The State of Clay will be featured in the Parsons Gallery at the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society  May 5 thru June 3, 2018 .  Gallery hours Tuesday thru Sunday 12 – 4; Saturday 10 – 4.

Juror will choose participants from digital entries, select award pieces in person, and will present a talk at the Artist Reception on May 6, 2018. In addition to cash awards and prizes, a People’s Choice award will be given at the end of the show.

All work must be for sale. Lexington Arts & Crafts Society retains 40% of the retail price/ the artist receives 60%. Lexington Arts & Crafts provides insurance coverage during exhibition.

ENTRY PROCEDURE

Entries and fees will be processed through CaFE.com at www.callforentry.org.

Applicants may submit up to 3 entries, with optional detail of each. Total 6 images.

Applicants must complete Custom Questions in their entirety, even if submitting less than 3 entries.

Application deadline is January 12, 2018. Late deadline is Jan 16, 2018.

Application fee is $35. Late fee is $45. Non refundable. Credit card only.

CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE

Artists accepted into the show must provide  a high resolution 300 dpi image of the accepted piece immediately after receiving acceptance email.

Accepted artwork must match the submitted digital entries. No substitutions.

Accepted artwork must be for sale.

Artists are responsible for shipping & insurance to and from the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society. Artists shipping work are responsible for providing a prepaid shipping label. No cash or checks. Shipped work must be sent in reusable, sturdy boxes (no loose peanuts). Late or damaged work will not be exhibited. Art damaged in transit is the responsibility between artist and  shipper.  

Wall pieces must be securely wired and properly prepared for hanging. LACS reserves the right not to display work that lacks professional craftsmanship, is unstable, differs from the accepted image, or that the gallery cannot physically accommodate.

Work exceeding 35 lbs. must be installed by the artist between April 30 & May 3, 2018 or by special arrangements with the gallery.
