TCA's Tucson Skies is an exhibition of photography illustrating the skies over Tucson. In collaboration with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, photography will display in an exhibition at the Tubac Center of the Arts and subsequently select digital images of the work will be shown at the Tucson Symphony Orchestra during an original composition by Tucson native, composer Anthony Constantino. Photographs should illustrate Tucson skies at day, dusk, and/or night.

Tucson Skies is an exhibition and a multimedia event. Photographers’ work will be on display during the exhibition from December 15 to January 14, 2018. Images from the exhibition will be utilized in a live multimedia symphonic performance of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra of composer Anthony Constantino’s world premiere composition (as yet unnamed) February 16th and 18th Anthony suggested the piece illustrated the progression of day, dusk, and night of the skies of Tucson

Jurors: John P. Schaefer and Peter Ensenberger

 John P. Schaefer is Professor Emeritus of the University of Arizona, where he had an active 21-year career in teaching and research. A conservationist and avid birdwatcher, he helped to organize the Tucson Audubon Society and found the Nature Conservancy in Arizona. Dr. Schaefer enjoys a reputation as a skilled photographer. He and Ansel Adams founded the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in 1975. Dr. Schaefer is the author of three best-selling books on photographic technique, and his photographs have been featured in Arizona Highways and many other publications. 

 Peter Ensenberger has been working as a professional photographer for more than 40 years and served as Director of Photography for Arizona Highways magazine for 25 years. During his tenure on the magazine staff, he became intimately familiar with the region’s most scenic locations. Because of his depth of knowledge and the photography industry, His book Focus on Composing Photos is a seminal work on compositional technique in photography.

Between seven and nine pieces will be chosen for the symphonic concert. These pieces may or may not be from the exhibition winners above.


Jurying will be done on the basis of digital images in jpg format.  Up to 3 works may be entered for consideration.  Nonrefundable entry fee is $30 for the first image, $3 each additional image.  Payments are made at the end of the CaFE™ entry process either via credit card online or a check mailed to the art center.


All artwork must arrive in a condition ready to professionally display or hang.  If framed, work must be suitably matted, (white, black or neutral colors preferred), simply framed and firmly wired. No saw tooth hangers.  TCA reserves the right to disqualify any selected entry upon arrival that does not meet the above requirements or is deemed unsuitable for display.


All work must be for sale. TCA will retain a 40% commission, Price work accordingly.

Photography and Images:

Photographers agree to release the use of images of accepted works to TCA and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra only as a permanent record of the exhibition and performance and only for promotional use related to the exhibition, performance, and the art center.  Once accepted, artists may submit a high-resolution image for consideration for use in print promotions including the exhibit postcard. Please email a jpeg file at least 300 dpi to  Please include in the subject line of your email, "Tucson Skies".  Please include your last name and first initial along with the title in the name of the file.

Similarly, artists will need to provide a 1280 x 720 digital image for projection.  Entry must be original; entirely the work of the artist, executed within the last 24 months, and cannot have been previously shown at TCA. Photography may not be removed from the exhibit prior to the close of the exhibition on Sunday, January 14, 2018.


Artists are responsible for shipping to and from TCA.  Unsold work will be shipped back to the artist after the close of the exhibition.  Photographers must provide a PREPAID barcoded shipping label for the return of their artwork.
