The City of Pompano Beach will commission an emerging artist for the design and installation of a mural that will be located on an exterior wall behind the Bailey Contemporary Arts Building located at 41 NE 1st St., Pompano Beach, Florida. The mural should focus on the idea of playing with perspective. The City plans on continuing to expand the area into a mural alley entitled Artists Alley. This will be the fourth mural located in the alley.

THEME

The Public Art Committee is looking for mural designs that play with the idea of perspective and optical illusions, although other themes will also be considered. The design should have a strong presence with a concept that is creative. The materials, design and palette must stand up to local weather and be amenable to ongoing maintenance.

Logos and words are not to be used. The selected artist must apply a UV resistant sealant to the finished product. The medium of spray paint is encouraged as the wall is textured.

PROJECT LOCATION

The mural will be located on an exterior wall behind the Bailey Contemporary Arts Building located at 41 NE 1st St., Pompano Beach, Florida. This City is turning this alley into a mural alley entitled Artist Alley. The wall is across from the World Peace Mural, is about 23 ft. x 13 ft and is textured.

INSTALLATION

Staff will review and inspect the design in person during installation periods once the artist/design is selected and approved. During these reviews, Staff will make suggestions on the design and application of the mural that the artist will then follow.

Selected artist will be required to create a timelapse video of the mural as it develops.

ARTWORK PURCHASE BUDGET

The selected Artist will receive $1,500. The price will include all taxes, insurance and all other fees as well as any equipment the artist may need to complete the mural (i.e. cherry picker, paint, etc.). A UV resistant sealant must be applied.

 ELIGIBILITY

This is a national Call. The project is open to emerging visual artists only. An emerging artist refers to someone who is in the early stages of his/her career, who is up and coming and on their way to becoming a more established artist but who has not yet established a reputation among art critics. Artists are NOT eligible who are immediate family or business partners of members of the Public Art Committee or program staff.
