Prospectus: A juried exhibit dedicated to the presentation of functional ceramics, focusing on the fine art of dining, to include serving vessels, place settings, platters and dinner table décor. Proceeds from the sale of work, and associated events that will showcase the work, will benefit the Art Students League of Denver and its ceramics program. Exhibition Dates: April 6 – May 18, 2018 Deadline to Enter: January 22, 2018 Juror: Marty Fielding Awards: Designated awards for select artworks up to $250 Eligibility: Open to national artists at least 18 years of age. Submission Requirements: Enter up to five digital images and five detail shots of functional pieces that could be included at a dinner table, i.e. place settings, serving vessels and platters, functional sets, or dinner table décor (vases, candle holders, etc.). Please note that the number #1 image submitted may be used for publicity purposes. Work submitted must be innovative and original in design and must be a personal expression of the artist’s intent. Work submitted through the application process must be the actual works that will be displayed during the exhibit. The juror will select work on this basis. If submitting images of place settings, please expect to send a set of at least four place settings of the work based on the associated image, if that work is selected for the exhibit. Works must be made entirely out of ceramic materials (exceptions are limited to handles, knobs or other accents made out of cane, wood, wire etc., that are an integral part of the piece). Work submitted for review must have been completed by the artist within the past three (3) years and not shown previously at delecTABLE. Size restrictions: each piece or set may not exceed 30 inches in any dimension or 20 pounds in weight. Accepted work which displays poor craftsmanship or does not represent the pieces submitted as digital entries will be withdrawn from the exhibit. All ceramic work entered must be for sale. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. Sale proceeds will be paid to the artist within 30 days of the end of the exhibition. Designated awards for select artworks will be announced at Artist Reception and paid to recipients within 30 days of the end of the exhibition. Entry Fee: There is a nonrefundable entry fee of $30. You may submit up five pieces for consideration, which may include one full and one detail image of each piece of artwork. Payment is by Visa/MasterCard through CAFÉ or Personal Check sent to the Art Students League of Denver, 200 Grant Street, Denver, CO 80203, with “delecTABLE 2018 entry fee” written in the note field on check. Checks must be postmarked on or before January 22, 2018 and received at ASLD no later than February 1, 2018 to finalize your CAFÉ application, to the attention of: Front Desk Shipping & Insurance: The artist is responsible for freight and insurance on the work to and from Art Students League of Denver. ASLD is responsible for insurance during the exhibition. When you ship your piece(s) for the exhibit, you must also include a pre-paid UPS or FedEx return shipping label for the return shipping of your piece(s). If no return shipping label is enclosed, this returns can’t be guaranteed. Pieces not sold during the exhibit will be returned in their original packaging. Details regarding packaging requirements will be provided with the acceptance letter. Local artists may arrange to hand-deliver and pick up accepted work. Marketing: Designated awards for select artworks up to $250. Produced by the Art Students League of Denver, the exhibit will be marketed through ASLD.org website and course catalog, event postcards, and local print media. This exhibit and the associated delecTABLE fundraising events will feature the work of 30-40 national artists, and current ASLD ceramics faculty. A complimentary, invitational culinary-themed two dimensional exhibit will be displayed in conjunction with the delecTABLE exhibit. Sales & Insurance: All work must be available for sale. ASLD retains 40% commission of the sales price. Insurance will be set at 60% of sale value. ASLD will not be responsible for loss or damage to work in transit to or from ASLD. All accepted work that is not sold during the exhibit must either be picked up or will be shipped back to the artist within 30 days of the exhibit. If artwork is to be picked up rather than shipped, the ASLD will not be responsible for loss, theft or damaged work after 14 days of the last day of the exhibit. Artists’ works will be selected based on a submission of a maximum of five (5) functional ceramic pieces or sets shown in five separate images, with an option to add one detail shot for each piece or set submitted. Each professional quality image must be in JPEG (.jpg) format, 300 DPI, 1920 x 1920 and must conform to CAFÉ’s file size specifications. Low resolution images (smaller than 300 dpi) are not guaranteed to be included in the printed promotional materials associated with the exhibit. We recommend submitting high resolution images. He continued his study of ceramics as a teaching assistant at Penland School of Crafts and received an M.F.A. from the University of Florida. Fielding’s work is included in invitational and juried exhibitions locally, nationally and internationally such as Strictly Functional and The Zanesville Prize. Fielding is currently working as the Operations Manager at the Facility for Arts Research at Florida State University in addition to teaching ceramics courses there. Marty’s teaching experience includes SUNY New Paltz, Florida Atlantic University, Ohio Northern University and Middlebury College and several community studios including Frog Hollow in Middlebury, Vermont where a Resident Potter. His experience includes teaching workshops at the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, The Potter’s Council Workshop in San Diego, and Truro Center for the Arts on Cape Cod. His work is published in several books as well as Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated, and Clay Times. Fielding Artist Statement: I seek harmony in my surroundings, moments of respite from the rush and concerns of daily life. I find a sense of calm in the emotion expressed in a song, muted colors in nature and art, and drinking coffee from a handmade cup. The synthesis of my research in post-modern architecture, abstract painting, and experimental music culminates in utilitarian pottery. Each of these influences contains the element of abstraction, an austerity and restraint in form, and an intentional trajectory for moving the body, eye, or psyche through space. Grounded architecturally inspired forms communicate stability, while cantilevered components act as a counterpart to their mass. Visual chords of color establish a harmonized background. Architectural features punctuated with vivid color conduct the viewer’s eye around the piece and settle into a mellow mid-tempo beat. The functional parameters of the vessel allow me to achieve two important goals: offering individuals an interactive experience through use, and questioning the aesthetic conventions of the archetypal pot within the framework of utility. A surprising rendition of a familiar pot strikes the viewer with a feeling of discovery, enticing a closer investigation through sight, touch and interaction. Geometric forms combined with painted color become utilitarian 3-D Color Field paintings. Vessels and groupings reference skyline and double as musical phrasing or waveforms of sound. Both architects and potters are fundamentally engaged in designing functional space. Architecture holds people; people hold pottery. Like the sentiment in a song, I instill calmness in my vessels to be experienced through use and contemplation within people’s hands and homes.
