Project Overview

Coverings 2018 and the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs have partnered to develop a student competition that will create three artistic public benches for the City of Atlanta. Students are requested to review the requirements of the competition below and submit their entries as outlined.

Coverings is the largest ceramic tile and natural stone trade fair and expo in the United States. It features over 1,100 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and is the stage for introducing some of the most innovative tile and stone products in the world. Coverings serves as a valuable resource for continuing education for the 26,000 industry professionals that attend. Coverings offers more than 75 informative, accredited seminars and live demonstration sessions throughout the show, all free of charge.

The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs creates and promotes rich and diverse cultural experiences in the City of Atlanta that enhance quality of life and expand the city’s international reputation while preserving and protecting Atlanta’s cultural heritage.

Who Should Enter
This competition is open to graduate and undergraduate students in the Metro Atlanta Area who are currently enrolled in an architecture, sculpture or studio arts program. All applicants, regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, origin or disability will be considered.



Objectives

In partnership with Coverings 2018, the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs seeks to highlight the uniqueness of Atlanta by producing a work of art or functional piece that will foster community togetherness and engagement. Each submission must indicate how that piece relates to Atlanta where the pieces will be temporarily installed. The objectives are to:

Encourage community togetherness and engagement
Showcase the versatility of tile
Highlight the vibrancy of Atlanta

Provide a sense of pride 

Technical Considerations:

Design should address all the objectives listed by the City of Atlanta
Design should not exceed 4’ L x 4’ W x 4’ H
90% of the surface area must be tile
Structure must be transportable
Colors and if applicable, specific tile requests (not brand specific) must be clearly identified and labeled
Porcelain and glass tile will be selected by tile distributor from proposed design. In the event specific selections cannot be procured, Coverings will work with student to select suitable alternatives
Structure should be an artistic bench

Submission Requirements:

Please submit the following images:

(1) digital presentation board in PDF format not to exceed 5MB containing:

(1) Dimensioned plan drawn to scale

(2) to (4) Renderings of the completed structure

(2) Additional drawings of the structure (elevation, perspective)

Any additional elements to convey the overall concept

Please use file name: COV18 + initials_competition

(1) 24”x24” digital presentation board with name of piece, brief description, and inspiration. This will be used with the piece as part of the display at Coverings. You can include images in this board.

Document dimensions not to exceed 11”x17”

NOTE: Do not place your name or other identifying information on your board or you may be disqualified.

Judging Criteria:

Originality of Design

Is the artwork unique and original to the proposing artist/architect?

Artistic Merit of Design

Is the design visually and conceptually stimulating?

Does the design effectively showcase tile?

Design’s relevance to with proposed community

Does the work engage and consider Atlanta? How will the design

interact with its viewers? Is the subject matter or design relevant

and appropriate for this audience?

Design’s completion of objectives

Does the work address objectives as outlined above?

Durability of proposed artwork

Is the proposed artwork weather and vandal proof?

 

Prizes:

3 Structures will be selected. Winners will receive:

-First prize will receive $3,000 + bench will be featured as part of the City of Atlanta beautification project
-Second prize will receive $2,000 + bench will be featured as part of the City of Atlanta beautification project
-Third prize will receive $1,000 + bench will be featured as part of the City of Atlanta beautification project
-If additional benches are selected for honorable mentions, they will receive $500.

Timeline:

MARCH 7 Winning design (s) selected and sent notification
MARCH 7 – MAY 5 Fabrication by Coverings contractors
MAY 8-11 COVERINGS 2018
MAY 8 at 9:45 a.m. Award presentation
