Juror: Michael Takemoto

Biography:

Michael Takemoto is a visual artist and Associate Professor of Art at the University of Hawai’i Maui College.  Takemoto received a BFA in Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.  He earned an MA and an MFA in Drawing and Painting from Northern Illinois University.

Takemoto has exhibited his paintings, murals, sculptures, and installations at various locations in Hawai’i, including the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center.  In 2003, his work was featured in the 6th Biennial of Hawai’i Artists at the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu.

Takemoto has served as a Visual Arts Consultant for the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. He has been a juror for a number of statewide exhibitions and organizations including the Hawai’i Art Education Association, the Schaefer Portrait Challenge, and Malama Wao Akua.

At UH Maui, Takemoto teaches courses in art appreciation, drawing, painting, and printmaking.  He has also worked as a teaching artist with the Maui Arts and Cultural Center education program, the HSFCA’s Artists-in-the-Schools Program, the Art Exploratory, and the Kaunoa Senior Center.

Juror’s statement:

I’m very honored to serve as a juror for this exhibition. I’m looking forward to selecting works based on their overall aesthetic quality, technical excellence, and meaningful content.  I am well aware that judging art is an imperfect science, subject to the juror’s sensibilities.  With this in mind, I will strive my best to select art which, to me, represents the epitome of the submitted works.  My goal is to develop a comprehensive exhibit which will reflect the diversity and creativity of our visual arts community.

Prizes: Monetary prizes will be awarded.

Works should be for sale – HIAA will charge 20% commission on all sales
