"As the featured artist in a 2017 three-person exhibition at the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks, I had the wonderful opportunity for my work to be prominently displayed in their space. Beyond the exhibition, the museum invited to give an artist’s talk, featured me on their website and had a wonderful piece written on my work by a writer who regularly contributes to Art in America. This opportunity and type of recognition has no doubt led to other museum exhibition opportunities, artist talks and acquisitions. I look forward to seeing how CMATO grows beyond their present walls and feel gratitude for the generosity they showed me."

Rebecca Rutstein, 2018

The goal of the Open Call program is to provide an avenue for artists to reach new audiences through the support of a curated museum exhibition. Collaborating with the Art Department Chairs from California Lutheran University, California State Channel Islands, Moorpark College, and Ventura College (jurors for the exhibition), it is envisioned that the region's unique aesthetic taste or point of view will emerge.

The exhibition will focus on three to five artists and will display at least 3 works each. To complement the exhibition, CMATO will create an online catalogue, including essays on the artist and their works. The exhibition will also be presented on CMATO's website.

Here's last year's exhibition - featuring Rebecca Rutstein, Inguna Gremzde, and Thomas Wheeler.

ABOUT CMATO

CMATO is a participatory museum where visitor engagement is paramount and collaboration is key.  It's a place where people connect and experiences are shared.

About Michael H. Yee:
Michael Yee help found the California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks (CMATO).  Mike was a mixed media artist who dreamed of providing the Conejo Valley region a world-class art museum. Unfortunately, he was taken away from us too soon. To honor his vision as a museum founder and artist, we dedicate this and all future open calls to him. We will never forget you Mike!
