The John James Audubon Center (JJAC) is accepting proposals for Inspiring Donor Recognition Art that will be placed in the lobby of its new Visitor Center, which is scheduled to open in spring 2019.  For images of Center and location of Donor Recognition Art:

JJAC, located near Valley Forge, PA, at Mill Grove, was the first home in America of artist/naturalist John James Audubon. The site is owned by Montgomery County (PA), managed by National Audubon Society, and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The new visitor center will serve as a gateway to the historic structures and more than 200 acres of bird habitat. Inside, visitors will discover 5,000 square feet of exhibits interpreting birds and the life of John James Audubon.

This Request for Proposal is intended to identify a qualified source to provide a Donor Recognition Art piece that integrates exceptional and creative artistic design with donor recognition. The final piece must:

  1. Honor donors who have contributed to funding the project and encourages additional donor investments.

  2. Add a meaningful artistic element to the lobby of the new Visitor Center.

  3. Compliment the overall aesthetic of the building architecture.

  4. Honor the legacy of Audubon by communicating the intrinsic value and beauty of birds.


General Conditions:

  1. National Audubon Society, through Audubon Pennsylvania, will be the contracting agent, and will work directly with artists throughout the process. Montgomery County should not be contacted.

  2. The dimensions for the space reserved for the piece is 13.8 ft. high, 7 ft. wide, and 2 ft. deep.

  3. The donor recognition piece may also use space (8 ft. high, 6 ft. wide) above an adjacent interpretive panel. That panel, titled Where It All Began, provides the initial orientation to the site.

  4.  The scale of the piece must fit within the above parameters, but may be smaller than the given dimensions.

  5. The piece may “fly off the wall” above head height to expand beyond the 2ft. depth

  6. Elements may be anchored to the wall, ceiling or both. Elements, however, may not be anchored to the floor.

  7. The piece can be made out of durable and cleanable material including (but not limited to) ceramic, stone, metals, wood, or glass.

  8. The piece must be securely anchored and meet all life-safety codes.

  9. The piece should allow for up to 50 names including individuals, foundations, businesses and government entities, with some names to be added after the initial installation.

  10. Names should be presented in four distinct sizes (approx. 3 x-large, 3 large, 20 medium, 24 small).

  11. There must be a means of adding up to 20 additional names in the two smaller sizes in the future.

  12. Date for project completion is March 1, 2019. This date, however, is subject to change based on unforeseen delays in the overall project construction schedule.

  13. Artists should be able to design, build and install donor recognition for a total of $20,000. Total cost can be subject to change based on the proposal's options for added or reduced costs. Interested parties may request photographs of the site which include the designated space for the feature.

RFP Responses:

  1. Responses to this RFP should be submitted in a single PDF through Call for Entry/CaFE or by email to not later than May 1, 2018. For exceptionally large files, we will accept a link to cloud storage. The link, however, must remain active until June 1, 2018.

  2. You may obtain a PDF document with drawings of the new building and the location of the Donor Recognition Art piece through Call for Entry/CaFE or by emailing

  3. All final terms and conditions will be subject to negotiations.

  4. Proposal must remain valid for period of 60 days.

  5. Responses must include:

    1. Description and photos of at least 3 projects that are substantially similar to this project; and/or description and photos of at least 3 projects that could be adapted to include donor recognition.

    2. A letter of interest briefly describing experience with commissioned art work, and why your work and experience is a good fit for this project (not to exceed 500 words).

    3. Resume/CV listing relevant experience and contact information.

    4. A basic visual concept for the work must be provided. This concept should be supported by sketches, written description, references/images to previous work, or any samples/visual aids you choose to provide.

    5. One page outlining: timeline, milestones, preliminary budget, and likely cost of ownership.

    6. The budget may include options to reduce or add to cost.

Selections Process:

  1. All proposals received will be reviewed by a committee, including representatives of National Audubon Society and Montgomery County.

  2. Selection criteria shall include, but is not limited to: professional qualification of the artist(s); their proven ability to undertake and successfully deliver projects of this type on time and within budget; artistic merit and craftsmanship; suitability of the submission for the intent and site.

  3. JJAC anticipates selecting at least two artists for an in-depth discussion at the site. Artists will have an opportunity to further explain their proposal, materials, and methods. The Committee will respond to questions regarding conditions at the site, budget, and other issues. If you have a standard set of terms and conditions, please submit them with your proposal. Artists selected for interview will receive a $1,000 honorarium.

  4. All terms and conditions will be subject to negotiation.

  5. Audubon reserves the right to award this project to the bidder that presents most compelling piece within the budget guidelines as determined solely by National Audubon Society in its absolute discretion.

  6. The final artist(s) selected will be required to enter into a Professional Services Contract with National Audubon Society.
