Fourth Annual NorthStar National Watermedia Juried Exhibition

White Bear Center for the Arts, 4971 Long Avenue, White Bear Lake, Minnesota. 

Juror and Judge

Rachel Daly has been the Visual Arts Program Director of Artistry in Bloomington MN for more than 18 years. In this capacity she oversees the two exhibition spaces showcasing the work of hundreds of emerging and established artists from a five-state region and acts as the artist liaison for the City of Bloomington’s Creative Placemaking in the South Loop initiative. Daly is also a mentor to individual artists advising them on developmental skills needed to further their artistic career and facilitates an Artist Support Group focused on bringing artists together to network and discuss issues and topics related to their professional growth. Before joining Artistry’s staff, Daly served as Executive Director of the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts in Fridley, Minnesota. She has served on the Board of Directors for Bloomington Art Center, and as a former Executive Director of Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts, Fridley MN. In the last 18 years she has judged more than 25 exhibitions throughout Minnesota, and has been a guest speaker/presenter on another 13 occasions. Daly has also served as panelist for the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council for over 20 years. In 2012, the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture selected Daly to attend a Regional Leadership Institute for Minnesota Arts Organizations.

Awards

NorthStar Watermedia Society will award a minimum of $4000 in cash and non-cash prizes for the 2018 National Exhibition. (In 2017, awards totaled $8472 in cash, product, and certificates.)

·         Best of Show - $1250

·         2nd Place - $1000

·         3rd Place - $750

·         Named awards and additional cash/product awards 

Eligibility
Open to all artists 18 years or older. All work submitted must be suitable for a family audience.

Entry Fee (non-refundable)

·         NorthStar Watermedia Society members: $40 for up to three images.

·         Non-members: $50 for up to three images.

·         Those wishing to join NorthStar may add $35 individual annual dues during the entry   process (total $75).

·         You need not be a NorthStar member to enter the National Exhibition, but you must be a NorthStar member if you hope for a possibility of signature status. 

Entry Procedure

All entries are handled by www.callforentry.org. Entry deadline is midnight, July 1, 2018.

·          Each artist may submit up to three paintings; however, only one can be selected for the exhibition.

·         Show only the image, no frame or mat. The image must be correctly oriented (vertical or horizontal).

·         No digital watermark may be shown in the image.

·         After a painting has been entered, its title and price may not be changed. Please price paintings considering  framing costs, applicable sales commissions (total 35% in 2018, see below), or as NFS.

Specifications and Restrictions

·         Entries limited to paintings in watercolor, acrylic, casein, gouache, water-soluble ink, and egg tempera.

·         Acceptable surfaces include paper, yupo, canvas, canvas board, or board.

·         Only the artist’s own hand painted papers may be used for collage.

·         No paintings accepted that use pastel, oil pastel, wax crayon, water soluble oil, alcohol inks, computer generated images, or any form of print reproduction.

·         Work and source material must be wholly original and not derived from any published images or other artists’ work.

·         All works submitted must have been completed after January 1, 2016, and not previously exhibited in an NSWS exhibition.

·         Maximum size, including frame, 42” in any direction. Maximum depth 3”.

·         Minimum image size 80 square inches (i.e. 8x10).

·         Framing required for all paintings, except a gallery-wrap canvas finished on all sides as continuation of the image, or cradled Ampersand.

·         All paintings must be wired for hanging on the vertical sides of the frame. No saw tooth hangers allowed. Finished work to be suitable for hanging in a fine arts gallery.

·         If your painting requires a clear covering, you can use glass or plexiglass.

·         No work may be withdrawn before close of exhibition.

·         NorthStar cannot make special shipping arrangements.

·         Accepted painting must be same as entry.

·         If an accepted painting is not submitted for the show, the artist will be disqualified from entering any NorthStar Watermedia Exhibition for three (3) consecutive years.

Sales
White Bear Center for the Arts retains a 20% commission on any artwork sold in the exhibition. NSWS retains 15% commission on any artwork sold in the exhibition. (Total of sales commissions 35%) All insurance responsibility of the artist. 

Delivery of Artwork
Every artist whose painting is accepted will receive instructions for shipping or hand-delivery. Read the instructions carefully.

·         Hand-delivered artwork must include the following:

—     Gallery fee: $20 check made out to NorthStar Watermedia Society

·         Shipped Artwork must include ALL of the following:

—     Gallery fee: $20 check made out to NorthStar Watermedia Society

—     Handling fee: $60 check to Artists’ Choice for cartage and unpacking and repacking services

—     Prepaid return shipping label
