Niaulani Sculpture Garden  
CALL FOR ENTRY     I N T E R P L A Y: A R T  S C I E N C E

DEADLINE:  12/31/18 at 11:59p.m.  Mountain Time Zone

ELIGIBILITY

Professional, amateur artists, and university students eighteen (18) years or older are invited to submit original works that address conceptually and visually the intersection of art and science.

SUBMISSION

Artists may submit up to three (3) original works; submissions must include a didactic or  “artist statement” that may be edited by VAC for promotion and educational purposes. 

ENTRY FEE

$20 (for up to 3 works). In addition (while not required) your membership to the Volcano Art Center would be greatly appreciated. https://volcanoartcenter.org/support/become-a-member/

SHIPPING

Young Brothers will provide shipping (gratis/free of charge) for up to five (5) works selected for this Hawaii island exhibition.  Artists will be responsible for packing the artwork on pallet and delivery to Young Bros.

The outdoor sculpture competition encourages the creation of original new work that stimulates visual contemplation and conceptual dialog with the natural environment of the Kilauea Volcano region, for the appreciation and edification of residents and visitors to our garden at the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village

REQUIREMENTS: 

 
  1. The rainforest will demand use of materials appropriate enough to withstand prolonged exposure to the environment with an alignment of concept that is durable enough to withstand the elements for 15 months.

  2. The exhibition encourages broad interpretation of the intersection of Art : Science coupled with craft and material resolution of the highest quality.

  3. Artist (or proxy) will be required to work with a VAC installer on location to direct attachment of foundation/sculpture security hardware. 

  4. Artist will be required to a) sign a waiver of liability; b) sign a Purchase of Service Contract

  5. Artists will be responsible for arranging transportation of work (shipped to , or on Hawaii island) to and/or from the VAC Niaulani Campus garden.  

 

Provisions by VAC: 

 
  • Construction of sculpture foundations and assistance with installation; securing of sculptures to bases as instructed by artist.

  • Press releases, radio spots to announce the exhibit, and educational material about the exhibit to distribute to visitors

  • Assistance with uninstallation

 

Please Note:

Works shipped gratis by Young Brothers must be returned by similar arrangement to the Hilo Port.  

Each artist will be invited to speak about their process or provide a workshop at a time to be determined during the run of the exhibition.

SELECTION PROCESS

Digital review of submissions for the exhibition “INTERPLAY ART : SCIENCE” will be via Selection Committee directed by Professor Michael D. Marshall, Chair Art / PARTS, University of Hawaii at Hilo.  
 

The committee will render its decisions based on:

  1. Strength of Concept

  2. Form

  3. Determination of Durability

How well the materials used to execute the design; projected to hold up under the extreme of constant exposure to weather and VOG, is a matter of public safety.
 

To facilitate committee review, applicants are required to submit with proposal:

  • Technical Data Sheet

  • Detailed written summary of performance characteristic for all key elements and components of the submission.  


VAC reserves the right to omit from the exhibition any sculpture that differs significantly from the digital image that was reviewed and approved by the Selection Committee.

 

SELECTION COMMITTEE

Isabella Ellaheh Hughes: Co-Founder and Director, Honolulu Biennial Foundation. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hughes is an independent art critic, curator, and part of the co-founder/director team for the international Honolulu Biennial Foundation that focuses on artists from the cultures linked by the Pacific Ocean. Sheʻs written for ArtAsiaPacific, Brownbook, Contemporary Practices, Frieze, Harper’s Art Bazaar Arabia and Ibraaz, in addition to contributing to exhibition catalogues for Honolulu Biennial 2017, Singapore Art Museum, Barjeel Art Foundation, Agha Khan Museum, and Bahrain’s Ministry of Culture. She is the editor of the monograph, Sama Alshaibi: Sand Rushes In (Aperture Foundation, 2015), and has curated exhibitions nationally and internationally, including for Honolulu Biennial Foundation, Art Dubai Projects, Ayyam Gallery, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Transformer Gallery, and Maraya Art Center. A speaker and moderator of panels, Hughes has also served as a nominator for the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship Program; Abraaj Capital Art Prize, as well as a juror for the YICCA 2013 International Contest of Contemporary Art, Art Omi International visual arts residency, and most recently has served as the juror for the 40th Art Maui in 2018 and 2016 co-curator of CONTACT: Foreign and Familiar at the Honolulu Museum of Art School.

 

Mr. Yen Wen Fang is one of the founders of Engineering Partners, Inc. and has over 25 years of experience in Hawaii and California as a Design Engineer, Project Engineer/Manager, and Principal. Mr. Fang’s Civil Engineering expertise includes the design of site and roadways, street and intersection improvements, drainage, sewer collections, sewer studies, individual wastewater systems, water systems, drainage systems, drainage and flood studies and grading design. Mr. Fang’s Structural Engineering experience includes building and bridge foundations, seismic and structural evaluation of existing buildings, site retaining walls and concrete box culverts, low rise buildings, and custom homes. Mr. Fang also provides Special Inspection services for building projects that require special inspection for structural framing construction. 

 

Michael D. Marshall was born in St.Louis, Missouri and attended the University of Illinois,Champaign-Urbana, IL, BFA 1975; Yale University, New Haven, CT, MFA 1977. Professor Marshall has taught full-time at the University of Hawaii Hilo since 1984 and currently serves as the Chair, UH Hilo Art Department and Performing Arts (PARTS) Department program; volunteer Executive Director, East Hawaii Cultural Council / Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art (EHCC/HMoCA). Recent exhibition projects include: “The Global Metaphysics of Abstract Painters/Performers”, EHCC/HMoCA (co-curator),February 2 - 23, 2018; 2017 SAiH Faculty Exhibition, EHCC/HMoCA (curator),July 2017“; “Context for Figure: Representation in the 21st Century” (curator) international juried competition hosted in conjunction with invitational co-presentation by the Japan Enameling Artist Association, Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center, July 2015 SummerAi Hilo Exhibition. “LOOK LIKE WHAT IT MEANS” (curator) international juried exhibition and symposium in conjunction with Poetry Scores Hawaii, featuring visual responses to 25 select poems by Albert Saijo, February 15 through April 15, 2015, UHH Campus Center Gallery;“Re-imagining Paper and Fiber International Invitational” (curator) July 7 through 25, 2014,Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center, Hilo, HI;
